Chapter011MUSTERING THE ARMY OF THE LORDAnd the LORD spake unto Moses in the wilderness ofSinai, in the tabernacle of the congregation, on the firstday of the second month, in the second year after theywere come out of the land of Egypt, saying, Take ye thesum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, aftertheir families, by the house of their fathers, with thenumber of their names, every male by their polls; Fromtwenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forthto war in Israel: thou and Aaron shall number them bytheir armies. And with you there shall be a man of everytribe; every one head of the house of his fathers (Num.1:1-4).God told Moses to number the fighting men of Israel. This messagecame to Moses in the wilderness. "In the wilderness" (bemidbar) wasthe original Hebrew title of the fourth book of the Pentateuch. Thetitle of this book in the Septuagint, the Greek translation of theHebrew Scriptures (275 to 100 B.C.), was Arithmoi, (1) from which weget the English word, arithmetic. The English title, Numbers, isrelated to arithmoi. The book begins with God's command to numberthe people. This was a military numbering, i.e. a mustering oftroops. (2) Every man above age 19 was mustered, even though somewere physically unfit for duty, e.g., the aged. The principle here wasthat the army of Israel was a holy army of all the men of the nation.Those who could not fight were represented by those who could. Thiswas analogous to the distinction between front-line troops and thoseon duty far from the battlefield. All were in the army, but some did thefighting. All were "in uniform," but not all carried weapons.
