ECORD: <strong>European</strong> <strong>Consortium</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>Research</strong> <strong>Drilling</strong>To become a significant partner of IODP and provide access tomission-specific plat<strong>for</strong>ms, 17 <strong>European</strong> countries and Canadajoin <strong>for</strong>ces to be part of the programme as a single member: the<strong>European</strong> <strong>Consortium</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>Research</strong> <strong>Drilling</strong> (ECORD).All ECORD activities are exclusively funded from the nationalcontributions to the consortium.The challenging International <strong>Ocean</strong> Discovery Program (IODP2013-2023) has required a new ECORD structure (below) toraise ECORD’s profile, visibility and efficiency, and better servethe community in Europe, Canada and associate partners.The 18 ECORDmembers.• The ECORD Council is the funding entity of ECORD. Everymember country has a seat and the Chair changes every year.• The ECORD Managing Agency (EMA) is the legal entity ofECORD. Administered by INSU-CNRS (France), EMA representsECORD in all IODP entities. EMA pools the funds from all themember countries and sub-contracts the ECORD ScienceOperator (ESO).• The ECORD Science Operator (ESO) is the operational entityof ECORD. Managed by the British Geological Survey (part of theUK’s Natural Environment <strong>Research</strong> Council), ESO undertakesdrilling operations and technological developments <strong>for</strong> missionspecificplat<strong>for</strong>m (MSP) expeditions. Within ESO, Bremen Universityis in charge of core analyses and curation at the Bremen CoreRepository (BCR). The <strong>European</strong> Petrophysics <strong>Consortium</strong> (EPC)carries out all logging and petrophysical activities.• The ECORD Science Support and Advisory Committee(ESSAC) is the ECORD scientific committee with responsibility<strong>for</strong> planning and co-ordination of ECORD’s scientific contributionto IODP.
