Joe Hughes. <strong>National</strong> FFA Vice<br />
President from Duncan. South Carolina,<br />
is in West Germany explaining the aims<br />
and operation of the FFA to the people<br />
of Germany. He is working in the farm<br />
youth phase of the United States" indus-<br />
trial exhibit.<br />
Joe is conducting demonstrations and<br />
explaining how the various phases of the<br />
FFA and vocational agriculture programs<br />
are used in instructing American<br />
farm youth. In doing this, he will ex-<br />
plain the farm mechanics program, classroom<br />
work, and the supervised farming<br />
program, among other parts, and how<br />
they are related. He is also using visual<br />
aids to better get the FFA and vo-ag<br />
message across.<br />
Joe left August 30 and will return<br />
October 1. The FFA, in cooperation<br />
with the United States Information<br />
Agency made the trip possible.<br />
A feature of the <strong>National</strong> Convention<br />
in October will be a talk by Joe telling<br />
about his trip. It should be interesting<br />
and educational to hear Joe tell about<br />
his experiences there, and how the story<br />
of FFA and vocational agriculture was<br />
received by the young people of Europe.<br />

Applications of genetics to plant and<br />
animal breeding are shown in ""The<br />
Thread of Life," the new Bell System<br />
Science Series program that will be seen<br />
over NBC-TV on Friday evening. December<br />
9. The program presents some<br />
of science's latest discoveries about<br />
licredity.<br />
One section of the program is devoted<br />
to mutations, and describes how<br />
thev are used to grow more and better<br />
lood in many countries. Rust-resistant<br />
wheat, hybrid corn, and seedless watermelons<br />
are among the products of genetic<br />
breeding shown in the program.<br />
Other sections of "The Thread of<br />
Life""" are devoted to the functions of<br />
genes and chromosomes, the processes<br />
of mitosis and meiosis. and the role of<br />
deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in heredity.<br />
The experiments of Gregor Mendel<br />
with pea plants are also described in<br />
the program.<br />
