They were in trouble—deep trouble—in their relationships and their sexual lives. Thesewere decent folks. They went to church, prayed, and read thelatest books on marriage and relationships. But nothing seemedto work. That’s why they kept showing up at my door.Without exception their understanding of real intimacyand of their own sexuality was either nonexistent or deeplyflawed. One day as I looked at mycounseling calendar, it all came intofocus. An older couple was scheduledto meet with me. I had encounteredthem only briefly before, but theyseemed like wonderful, outgoing,and gracious people. When I sawmy secretary’s note that they werecoming in to discuss a marital issue, my first thought was oneof disbelief: What can I say to that kind of couple? They’retwice my age with twice my experience level.At that point I made a wise choice. I acknowledged mylimitations to God (I’m quite sure he already knew all aboutthem) and asked for his assistance: Lord, what would youhave me say to these folks that would really help them?
