Occasionally you open the barrel and takea big breath – totally gorgeous! You get drunk even withoutdrinking if the Schnapps is good. The Frischknecht one isabsolutely biological. There’s no chemistry in there; just lotsof biochemistry, though, from the good bugs. But watch outfor the Drosophila (a totally overrated model organism).Sometimes thousands fly out of a barrel when you open it.“Everyone welcome: March’s alumni reunionYou can try Maj Britt’s, Angus’ andFreddy’s wines and spirits – or win athree-course meal at Rosie’s pub –at thenext EMBL staff/alumni reunion on 8March at EMBL Heidelberg’s new AdvancedTraining Centre (ATC), to whichall EMBL and EMBO staff, alumni, Counciland SAC members are invited. The programme will include life sciencesand science and society talks, as well as anEMBL and alumni association update. We are delightedwith the worldwide response tothis campaign, which was launched in Octoberthis year. Donations were receivedfrom ten European countries, Australia, the United States and Canada.Based on the success of this campaign,we are confident that by 2012 it will bepossible to offer the John Kendrew Awardindefinitely. If 25% of EMBL alumni(1,000 people) donate an average of €50,we could cover 75% of the €65,000 requiredto fund this award in perpetuity. We hope you will join us in our goal torecognise and reward more young scientists’excellent research and science communicationthrough your continuedsupport.
