Jon Birchall is the Farm Manager. Jon is a finalist forthe 2010 Farmers Weekly Award for Countryside Farmer of the Year andwas awarded the Chilterns Environment Award for 2009. Our TraditionalQuality Meat business won the Countryside Alliance Local Food Award forEast Anglia 2009. The farm grows wheat for Hovis and Warburtons and rearsnative and rare breed Longhorn cattle, Wiltshire Horn sheep and MiddleWhite and other traditional pigs. The farm sells delicious well hung meat directto the customers. The Roxton Herd was started with the purchase of three in-calf cows in October1988. We now run approximately 20 cows which is as many as we cancomfortably house overwinter. I would like to leave them outside but by mid-October in most years they start to poach the parkland badly. Heifers surplusto requirements are sold if good enough to breed, a few cattle are soldprivately after hanging for 3 or4 weeks and the remainder are sold as fat orstores. On average steers are fit to kill at 25 to 28 months.
