Skill Center millage election Tuesday
After being required to
make many decisions on
the presidential election
ballot, voters of the Huron
County Intermediate
School District (HISD) will
vote again Tuesday, this
time on a single ballot
issue. They will be deciding
the fate of a 1.49 millage
increase re uest to fund a
skill center (for the HISD.
Jim Hunter, director of
vocational education for
the HISD, said that if the
residents of the district ap-
prove the millage request
for this year’s tax roll, the
district will receive state
and federal grants totalling
$1,492,650.
Hunter said that the 1.49
mills will generate $750,000
for the district. The millage
will be a charter, or con-
tinuous millage levy.

federal grants, the millage
levy must be put on the tax
roll for this year. The
grants will pay for 45 per-
cent of the needed $3.3 mill-
ion to build and equip the
center.
Hunter said that with the
money generated from the
millage increase, and the
grants, the skill center will
be paid off when it opens in
the fall of 1986. Hunter said
that by getting the millage
increase on this year’s tax
roll, the HISD will be able
to build the center without
a bond sale.
In 1973 and in 1974 voters
of the HISD rejected mil-
lage increase requests for
a skill center. Hunter said
that in 1973, the voters were
asked to approve 2.5 mills,
and a bond sale of $2 mill-
ion. In 1974 voters rejected
a 1.75 millage request and
a $1 million bond sale,
Hunter said that the HISD
’ is requesting less money
from local taxpayers be-
cause they are eligible for
the state and federal
grants .
Owen-Gage superinten-
dent Ronald Erickson said
that the district is working
hard to inform voters about
the election, and of the be-
nefits of the skill center.
“We are making a big
push, just like a millage
election, ” Erickson said.
“We want this to pass really
bad. ”
Erickson said that they
have been contacting indi-
viduals and informing stu-
dents about the need for a
skill center.
Hunter said that a build-
ing and site committee has
determined that the site for
the 60,oOO square foot skill
center would be ideally lo-
cated in Verona or Colfax
Townships. He said that the
area chosen has been based
on the committee’s studies
of student population, geog-
raphic location in the
county, and traffic conges-
tion in the villages and
cities in the area.
Presently students of the
HISD attend vocational
center classes at other
schools in the district. Ubly

Motorists who invest 30
minutes now in a simple do-
it -yourself preventive
maintenance program can
help guarantee t rouble-f ree
driving all winter.
“By following the
owner’s manual mainte-
nance recommendations
and performing 12 routine
checks, motorists will have
a more dependable vehicle
and find overall operating
costs reduced,” stated
Robert Tellier, Auto Club’s
Emergency Road Service

“A properly maintained
car can improve fuel
economy and cut operating
costs by as much as 20 per-
cent,” Tellier said, “If a
vehicle driven 15,000 miles
annually delivers 20 miles
per gallon with gas priced
at $1.23 per gallon, the sav-
ings could be $396 annually.
“In addition, motorists
who perform preventive
maintenance now will know
their cars can meet the
severest cold-weather
problems,” Tellier added.
Nearly half of all road
service calls occur between
December and March, and
80 percent of those calls are
caused by vehicle neglect,
not failure.
A survey of nearly 5,000
vehicles inspected during
the Auto Club’s 1983 Winter
Car Care Clinics showed
that 48 percent of the vehi-
cles checked had deficien-
cies, which if left unat-
tended, could have resulted
in breakdowns. The most
common problems were
low antifreeze, motor oil
and tire pressure (28 per-
cent of all vehicles
checked). Each of those
items can be maintained
through instructions in the
owner’s manual.
Preventive maintenance
is the key to a vehicle’s
overall performance. “If
motor oil is not changed at
specified intervals, engine
damage can result and is

costly to repair,” Tellier
said,
To perform the following
12-point check list, a
motorist will need a screw
driver, anti-freeze hydrometer
and a tire pressure
gauge, The checks can be
performed anywhere and
require about 30 minutes,
mMotor oil -- the owner’s
manual will specify intervals
between oil changes,
but the oil should be
checked each time the car
is filled with gasoline.
.Brake fluid level should
be within a quarter-inch of
the top of the master cylinder.
The screwdriver is
needed to pry off the clip
that holds the cover of the
brake fluid chamber.
.Fill the windshield
washer reservoir with a
good commercial solvent to
prevent freezing.
Check the level and
strength of antifreeze in the
radiator. Some cars have
overflow tanks where the
coolant can be checked.
Strength of antifreeze can
be checked easily with the
hydrometer. Never open a
hot radiator.
.Power steering fluid
level can be checked on a
dipstick similar to the oil
dipstick. To avoid overfilling,
add the fluid gradually
and test the level several
times.

filter up to the sun or next
to a light. If you can’t see
light through it, it is time
for replacement e
Check the automatic
transmission fluid with a
dipstick located on most
cars behind the engine on
the passenger side of the
car. The car should be
parked on a level grade
with the engine running.
@Test for fan belt tension
and look for fraying or
cracking. Press your
thumb on the middle of
each drive b&t. If thebelt
gives more than a half-inch,
have it tightened or replaced.
Also inspect hoses
and connections for leaks.
Clean battery terminals
and dirty cables with a baking
soda and water solution,
and check the battery fluid
level.
.Turn on all lights and
turn signals to make sure
they work.
Check tire pressure with
a gauge and inspect tread
wear. The spare also should
be checked.
Check windshield wipers
and replace them if
worn.
For best results, Tellier
advised motorists to perform
the checks on a
monthly basis.

Tenbusch said that they
have sent special school
newsletters to the residents
of the school district in-
forming them of the elec-
tion. The district has a com-
mittee that will be telephon-
ing area residents before
the election. Representa-
tives of the school, and
Hunter, recently spoke to
the Minden City Lions Club
on the need for the center.
Hunter said that one’of
the most important fea-
tures about the skill center
would be the training ank
retraining for different jobs
in the work force.
