<strong>Salamanca</strong> Welcomes New Staff MembersA Sally High welcome to Mrs. Ashley Malpiedi, the BOCES counselor for several BOCES high schoolclassrooms: Mrs. Sandy Scharf’s 12:1:1 class, Mrs. Anne Comstock’s Inclusion students, and Ms. MaureenYoung’s 8:1:1 class. Ashley graduated from the University of Buffalo and received her master’sin school counseling from St. Bonaventure University. This is her first year as a school counselor andshe has found SCCSD to be very welcoming. She enjoys everything about being a school counselor,particularly working as a team with the students, teachers, etc. to help the students achieve their goals.In her free time, she likes to read, exercise and garden in the summer. She has a number of degrees: an Associate in Arts fromJCC, a BS in Education as a Physical Education major from SUNYCortland, and a Master’s of Science and <strong>School</strong> Administrationfrom Niagara University. Ms. Stornes’ entire teaching career hasbeen in the field of special education and has given her many rewardingand fun experiences. Great Season Lady Warriors!7th <strong>Grade</strong> Art andArt EnrichmentThe Girls Modified Basketball team finished theirseason on December 18th with a 28-12 win over NorthCollins. Members of the team are: Jordan Askey,Emma Bocharski, Alyssa Coustenis, Hannah Dry, CamilleEmborsky, Siana Fernandez, Andie Hill, AllysonHoney, Cali James, Kashauna Learn, Ashley Miller,Paige Papa, Haleigh Siebert, Madelynn Turano,McKenzie Whitmore, and Ryanne Yehl. Their overallrecord was 6-2. Great season, ladies!Seventh grade art students have been developingsketching skills through a variety of techniques. Emphasisis on realism and shading with hand/eye coordinationand proportioning for overall development.Sixth through eighth grade art technique developmentprovides students the skills to develop their own individualstyles. Students pictured are demonstratingskills through art enrichment. Their high participationscores and demonstrated character traits gave themthe opportunity to do an independent study in acryliccolor mixing and painting techniques.January Business/Marketing Student of the Month Brendan JohnBrendan John has beenselected as the JanuaryBusiness/Marketing Studentof the Month due tohis determination, academicknowledge andpersistence, which makeBrendan exceptional. Hehas been specifically chosenbecause he is someoneyou will always findworking very hard andmaturely focusing on hisimmediate future. In additionto the persistenceand hard work that he exemplifies, Brendan helps those aroundhim whenever he is able. It is second nature for him to offer hisknowledge and assistance to others. Just as important is his abilityto work and learn on his own.Brendan has taken all the programming classes that <strong>Salamanca</strong>has to offer and he took it upon himself to ask to get anotherProgramming III (JAVA) course started so that he could learn itbefore he went to college. In addition to this, Brendan had notbeen able to get into the computer course that offers training for allof Microsoft Certifications. He has taken it upon himself to comein during lunch or other times during his school day to train onMicrosoft Certification simulation programs and to prepare for thereal tests. To date he has been able to take and pass the I CriticalCertification and Microsoft Word 2007, and he is now training forthe rest of Office 2007 MCAS Certifications.The business courses Brendan has taken include: Keyboarding,Programming I, Programming II, independent study JAVA,Career Planning, and Financial Management. Brendan has excelledscholastically and he has been on the high honor roll for hisentire school career. He has been nominated and selected to be inthe National Honor Society (Treasurer), Science Honor Society,French Honor Society, and Math Honor Society (President). Hehas been chosen Rotary Club Student of the Month for October2010. He has been one of the key players on the <strong>Salamanca</strong> VarsityTennis Team for five years and was nominated by his teamto be the Captain.He is a very active, conscientious and giving person who theBusiness Department would nominate, recommend and suggestfor any character award or scholarship. His involvement in thearts while he has been in high school is immense as he has been animportant part of the Drama Club and other auditorium productionsas head technician for light and sound during the past four years.He has also been involved in band for <strong>Salamanca</strong> High <strong>School</strong>Marching Band for the past six years and has been handpickedto attend Solofest three times in his high school career as well asbeing asked to attend All-County for band for two years.As you can tell, Brendan is a very eclectic person who is successfulat everything he attempts through hard work, persistenceand determination. In addition to his successes in academics, sportsand in the arts, Brendan has maintained a part-time job to helppay for his personal expenses and to prepare for college.
