Bob Ward Memorial<strong>Fellowship</strong><strong>Cuso</strong> <strong>International</strong> is pleased to announce thecall for applications for the Second AnnualBob Ward Memorial <strong>Fellowship</strong> to supportoutstanding research on the role and impact ofvolunteers in international development.The award celebrates the legacy of Bob Ward, one of the visionary foundersof <strong>Cuso</strong> <strong>International</strong>. As a former international volunteer and a dedicatedinnovator in the fields of social enterprise and community development, hewas also a champion of the citizen-based and partnership-driven model ofinternational development that is at the heart of our organization.Eligibility and ValueOpen to candidates globally, the <strong>Fellowship</strong> will be awarded to an individualthat is or has been engaged in social change work in the NGO/non-profitsector. Valued at a maximum amount of $25,000 for up to one year, the awardis intended to allow the recipient to make a significant contribution to thesector through research that demonstrates the impact of volunteering andadvances our understanding of related issues of policy and practice.The 2013 Bob Ward Memorial <strong>Fellowship</strong> will focus on the impact of diasporavolunteering. The <strong>Fellowship</strong> will explore the impacts of diaspora volunteeringon the volunteer and the volunteer’s home community as well as on thepartner organization and community in which they volunteered.• Open to people that are or have been engaged in social change work with atleast 10 years of relevant NGO/not-for-profit experience.• Open to candidates of any nationality. Established in 2007 to promote greater publicunderstanding of the significance of voluntaryaction and to strengthen leadership for civil societyand democratic/voluntary action.The fellowship is intended to provide a sabbatical to a leader in the NGO/notfor-profitsector, who would not normally have access to a sabbatical leave. Itis hoped that the award will free the recipient, at a transitional moment in hisor her professional development, to make a contribution to the sector, throughresearch and possible publication or dissemination in the medium of theapplicant’s choice.The award celebrates the legacy of preeminent Canadian adult educator, AlanThomas, founding President of the Carold Institute, and honours his passionateadvocacy of learning, of voluntary action and citizenship in the Canadian context.Eligibility• Awarded to a candidate in mid-career (normally with at least 15 years ofrelevant NGO/not-for-profit experience).Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada, andmay participate in the <strong>Fellowship</strong> in either English or French. We welcomeapplications in either French or English, and particularly encourage applicationsfrom visible minorities, Aboriginal peoples and persons with disabilities.Value and Duration of the <strong>Fellowship</strong>• A maximum of $60,000 for a fellowship of 8 to 12 months (maximum oneyear’s duration)The intent of the fellowship is to free the recipient from other responsibilities andprovide significant time for reflection and research. The successful applicant willbe expected to begin no later than October 2013.Application ProcessApplications are invited for projects that fitwithin the scope of promoting civil society andvoluntary action.
