Aloha!As the summer edition of Legacies goesto print, we’re preparing for the publiclaunch of the JCCH documentary film,The Untold Story: Internment of JapaneseAmericans in Hawai‘i.Since its October 2012 premier, The Untold Story has generatedinterest in the unique wartime experience of JapaneseAmericans in Hawai‘i and brought increased attention tothe historical preservation and educational activities of theJapanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i. To date, over 3,500 peoplehave watched The Untold Story at community screenings heldon O‘ahu, Maui, Kaua‘i and Hawai‘i. Consolidated Theaters atPearlridge ran the documentary for eight weeks and HawaiianAirlines has the film available on its international flightsbetween Honolulu and Japan.Many of you suggested we send the film to schools andgive copies to teachers for their classroom. I am pleased toannounce that grants from the State of Hawai‘i and PreserveAmerica will enable us to develop a teacher’s guide, duplicatesupplemental materials and distribute The Untold Story tohigh school social studies teachers throughout the state.Our educational activities, however, are not limited toWorld War II. We continue to expand our educationaloutreach to elementary school children through ourCultural Discovery Box Program. Last year, we had arecord number of students tour the historical exhibition,Okage Sama De, and we continue to develop strategies toteach the immigrant experience, plantation life as well ascultural classes for all ages and all audiences.In the coming year, you’ll see our educational programsincrease in scope and audience. You’ll also continue tosee us around the community at the Okinawan Festivalin late August and Peace Day on September 21st. If youhave a moment, please visit us at the Japanese CulturalCenter of Hawai‘i, pick up a DVD at the Gift Shop,meet sumo legend Jesse Kuhaulua (August 30) or learnabout Japanese American history through our historicalexhibit or Resource Center. Help us continue to meetour mission to Honor our heritage, Embrace our diversityand Share our future.Aloha,It has been a privilege serving on the JapaneseCultural Center of Hawai‘i’s Board ofGovernors and Board of Directors for the pastten years. In this my final year, I am honoredto once again serve as your chair.Your Cultural Center has been busy over the past few monthsclosing out our 25th Anniversary Celebration, hosting the galaSharing the Spirit of Aloha, convening our annual membershipmeeting and participating in many community events.As we closed out the celebration of our 25th Anniversary, weproudly celebrated a renewed vitality, increased visibility andgreater interest in the JCCH. The JCCH film The Untold Story:Internment of Japanese Americans in Hawai‘i was shown to sold outaudiences on O‘ahu, Maui, Kaua‘i, the Hawai‘i Island and on theWest Coast. Additionally, JCCH continues to gain recognition forits leadership in the efforts to preserve Honouliuli so that it canstand as a place to teach future generations of what can happenif we are not vigilant. The Cultural Center has been successful ingarnering support from the State Legislature and the National ParkService in these efforts.We closed out the fiscal year with our gala Sharing the Spiritof Aloha honoring Jennifer Goto Sabas, Kurt Osaki, AlvinOkami and the Okami Family, John Okutani (Spirit of JCCH)and Pacific Guardian Life. Thanking them all for not onlyembodying the Spirit of Aloha but for their efforts to share thatspirit with the community locally and elsewhere. It was a trulymemorable event and made possible only due to the dedicationof many volunteers and the JCCH Staff.I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to outgoing boardmembers, Curt Otaguro, Gordon Kagawa, Lance Mizumoto,and Dennis Esaki. We have been the beneficiaries of yourwisdom and support. The Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘iis better today thanks to your service.It also gives me great pleasure to welcome new board membersChristine Kubota, Mitchell Nishimoto, and Lori Teranishi, allsuccessful business leaders who will bring a fresh prospectiveand new energy to your Cultural Center.Thank you, again, for allowing me the opportunity to leadyour Cultural Center.
