India was thrust into the spotlight this month when she featured on Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares. Ramsay was so impressed by her ability in the kitchen that when the ailing vegetarian restaurant in Paris closed, he took her to London for a meal at Claridge’s – and has lined up training for her at his Boxwood Café, starting in January. Until then, she’s living back home and working full time at Shaws restaurant in Edinburgh. Plus A meat-lover, she’s guaranteed to cook you a great meal. Pasta is her speciality – made from scratch, obviously. Minus If you’re not keen on dogs, watch out for her three huskies, Storm, Sabaka and Darcy. Comedy creator by day and all-girl punk band vocalist by night, life is one constant blast with Jacqui. As producer for THE WOMEN entertainment at the Comedy Unit, she produced this year’s BBC Radio Scotland Summer Supplement, developed and commissioned new ideas for TV, radio and multimedia, and managed the latest Channel 4 venture Gags to Go, showcasing new comedy talent via clips sent to mobile phones. Her band, All About The Dots, has had rave reviews on Radio 1 and Xfm and, despite only being formed last Christmas, it is through to the semi-finals of King of Bands and looking to tour next year. River City devotees will know her as Heather – serial seducer and feisty filly down Shieldinch way, who has been in and out of trouble throughout her four years in the soap. But Jenni has other strings to her bow: as well as being a keep-fit fanatic, in 2004 she stood for election for the post of rector of Glasgow University – and came third. Plus She’s a gorgeous redhead. Minus What are the chances of walking unnoticed down Buchanan Street with her on your arm? Do Dote on her one-year-old son. Don’t Have two left feet – she loves dancing, especially salsa. 16 LORRAINE CULLEN NUTRITIONIST, 28 Lives Glasgow Who is she? As sports nutritionist to the Scotland rugby team, Lorraine was charged with looking after the World Cup players in Paris this year. Day to day, you’ll find her flitting between the Edinburgh-based squad and the Glasgow Warriors. A tomboy at heart, there aren’t many sports she won’t try – from basketball to triathlons – and she claims she’s getting younger as she gets older. Being a dance class devotee, she can make seriously cool shapes on the floor on a night out. Plus Massages on demand, long luscious legs… need we go on? Minus One vodka and she’s anybody’s. After six years’ travelling the world as project director for Ellen MacArthur’s sailing team, Kate is back on dry land in Edinburgh, where she has set up her own business specialising in managing sports events. Needless to say, she’s an outdoorsy kind of gal, and not just your average Munro-bagger, having sailed the Atlantic and ski-trekked across the Alps in the past few years. Don’t Think she’ll let you near her vintage navy E-type Jaguar – except to polish it. 18 MICHELLE McMANUS SINGER, 27 Lives Glasgow Who is she? It’s four years since Michelle won Pop Idol, during which time she has carved a successful career from the show. She has also shed an incredible ten stone in weight. This year saw a well-received run of Discotivity, a musical based on the nativity story, at the Edinburgh Festival. She has also bought a record label, presented her own show on BBC Radio Scotland and released a single from her new album. And if that weren’t enough, she’s thinking about opening a chain of juice bars. Passionate about conservation and wildlife, Gill volunteered for two years before getting her current job with the Scottish Wildlife Trust, where she travels the length and breadth of Scotland, training reserve managers and keeping tabs on all the flora and fauna. She’s not one to sit still – you might also find her trekking in Peru, cycling around the Uists or boogying to live music (she’s a regular festival-goer). Plus Her sense of fun and adventure. As marketing director of Graham’s, based in Bridge of Allan, Carol was responsible for the award-winning rebranding of the family dairy business, now the largest independent dairy in Scotland. A farmer’s daughter, Carol can lamb sheep and milk cows but prefers to spend her spare time cycling, running up hills or skiing. Plus You’re guaranteed adventure and sparkling conversation – not to mention free milk. Minus You’ll need to be super-fit to keep up with her energy levels – and have a forehand to match hers on the tennis court. After 12 years of working and training with the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, Rebecca took the plunge last year and started her own business, Green Edge Garden Design. Having gone back to her roots, she thrives on creating beautiful, sustainable gardens. Her unfaltering passion for plants continues in her writing and photography.
