AFAF – every dollar helps Airmen take care of Airmenby Jamie HaigCOMMANDO editorOne of Team <strong>Hurlburt</strong>’s Aimpointsis “Take best care of our wingmen,families and resources,” and thanksto the Air Force Assistance Fund,this task has become easier to accomplish.The AFAF campaign, which beginsFeb. 12 and runs through March 4,was established to raise funds forthe numerous charitable affiliatesthat provide support to Airmen, theirfamilies or surviving spouses.But it can’t be done without help.The 1st Special Operations Wingneeds volunteers to take the lead onthis all-around charitable campaign.“We put out notice that we’re lookingfor volunteers to help AFAF,”said 1st Lt. Ken Tuck, 1st SOW commandersoffice. “Anyone interestedcan call us at 884-4436.”The Air Force Village IndigentWidows’ Fund, the Air Force AidSociety, the Air Force Enlisted VillageIndigent Widows’ Fund and the Gen.and Mrs. Curtis E. LeMay Foundationare all supported by the donationsmade during this campaign.The <strong>Hurlburt</strong> <strong>Field</strong>/Eglin Air ForceBase Enlisted Village and its newaddition, the Hawthorn House, havebenefited from the money raised bythe AFAF.“It’s important that people understandthe money donated goes directlyto indigent widows,” said JodiJordan, Air Force Enlisted Village. “Itdoesn’t pay salaries or build buildings.It provides a subsidiary for thewidows to allow them to live theirlives the way they should.”The Enlisted Village also providestemporary housing after disasterssuch as hurricanes and for adultdependents of active-duty membersor their spouses. The HawthornHouse provides assisted living residencesin the village for widows aswell.The Air Force Aid Society is theofficial charity of the Air Force. It wasset up to help financial emergenciesthat everyone may encounter in theirlives.More than $12 million in directemergencyassistance is providedevery year and in instances such asHurricane Katrina, even more fundingis provided.The Society also handles an educationfund which has provided morethan 75,000 grants since 1988. Thereis also a tuition assistance programavailable to Airmen and their families.The LeMay Foundation has providedfinancial aid to widows andspouses of Air Force officers since1987, and in 1998, it expanded tocover spouses of retired personnel ofall ranks who were left with no financialresources.The AFAF is a campaign forAirmen to take best care of Airmen,their families and resources.
