Carnival profile:<strong>July</strong> <strong>2010</strong> AMUSEMENT TODAY 35Kissel Entertainment boosts 70 plus years of carnival experiencePam Sherborne<strong>Amusement</strong> <strong>Today</strong>Russ Kissel was raised inthe carnival industry.Yet, even after all the yearshe has been on a midway, themagic still exists for him onKissel Entertainment.“When it is all clickingjust right…when all the lightsare on, when the parking lotis full, when there is a roar oftractor pulls coming from thegrandstands, when the moneymachines are spinning, there isdefinitely a high,” Kissel said.“It’s just hard to explain unlessyou have been there.”Kissel and his wife, TammyKissel, are both third generationsin the carnival industry.The carnival boosts havingcombined experience of over70 years. CountyFair officials were verypleased with the <strong>2010</strong> event,which drew 68,877 duringfive-day run May 27-31.That figure represents adrop of just one percentagepoint from the 2009 event.“We did a lot of discountingat this year’s event,” saidManager T.J. Plew. “It workedfor us.”This year the SacramentoCounty Fair and Brass Ring<strong>Amusement</strong>s Midway of Fun,Oroville, Calif., the carnivalthat fielded the midway with31 rides, joined together toprovide a number of discountopportunities for fairgoers, especiallyfamilies, to get morebang for their buck by purchasingspecial ticket packagesin advance.Some of those discountsincluded:•Available at 30 Sacramentoarea Walgreen’s stores,the Fair ValuePass includedgeneral admission and unlimitedride wristbands for visitors13-61 years old for only$15.•Costco sold an eventPHOTOS COURTESY SACRAMENTO COUNTY FAIRDiscounts and promotions were the recipe to success forthe <strong>2010</strong> Sacramento (Calif.) County Fair, which ran May27-31. Brass Ring <strong>Amusement</strong>s Midway of Fun, Oroville,Calif.provided 31 rides on the midway including theChance Century Wheel and the Huss Ranger, seen at right.package that provided two generaladmissions, two couponsvalid for unlimited ride wristbandsand $10 worth of foodvouchers for just $26.99. Salesnumbers for Costco have notyet been released.•Plus, special offers wereavailable to local Farm Bureaumembers and fair sponsor VisionService Provider (VSP) employees.The community sought outthe deals with both the carnivaland fair redeeming more advancediscount coupons at boththe admission gates and on themidway this year than over thepast several years.Plew feels the discountshelped keep the attendancenumbers on par with last yeardespite the challenging economictimes.The agricultural componentof the fair had good participationwith nearly 800 4-H andFFA youth exhibiting homegrownlivestock helping to raise$454,000 for the livestock auction.Over 1,000 people showedoffschool projects, art, crafts,baked goods or floral design.Highlights this year includedthe “Wild About Monkeys”show, Oasis Camel Dairy andSafari Adventure Live, hypnotistTyzen and Chef Tyler Stone’sdaily cooking demonstrations.
