Tourism is an important factor for <strong>the</strong> economic growth, not just because of <strong>the</strong> revenues andemployment it generates, but also because of all <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r infrastructures associated with it, namely:restaurants, hotels, leisure and entertainment equipments, and small and medium businesses.However, tourism development must be balanced. We must capitalize <strong>the</strong> unexplored areas ofTimor-Leste and working in close cooperation with local communities, to ensure that <strong>the</strong> Timoresepeople are both partners and beneficiaries in t<strong>his</strong> process.In t<strong>his</strong> task it is essential to involve our more remote communities. We need to realize <strong>the</strong> dreams ofall Timorese citizens, involving <strong>the</strong>m directly in t<strong>his</strong> great project of national development, withconfidence that <strong>the</strong> Timorese are among <strong>the</strong> most skilled people in <strong>the</strong> world in what regardstransforming basic resources into major achievements, and consequently that we can realize ourdream of development without any type of exclusion.We want to develop tourism in Timor-Leste, but we want <strong>the</strong> right tourism for our Nation. We wantto be hosts to tourists that respect and value that which are <strong>the</strong> most precious things to us, <strong>the</strong>Timorese People – our land, our nature, our culture.In t<strong>his</strong> way it will be possible to provide Timorese citizens with better opportunities to improve <strong>the</strong>irlives. We can give you some examples of successful community intervention in <strong>the</strong> sector oftourism, namely:• Project “Tua Koin Eco-Aldeia” in Ataúro has had a ra<strong>the</strong>r positive impact in <strong>the</strong>management of marine resources, contributing to increase <strong>the</strong> income of <strong>the</strong> localcommunity;• Valusere Cooperative in Tutuala showed an increase of USD 2,500-4,000 per month interms of revenue increase in its last quarter review. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore it achieved significantimprovements in terms of <strong>the</strong> living conditions of fishermen, <strong>by</strong> improving fishing activities,transportation services and local guides;4
