Art Faces NecessityWe all know the adage “a picture is worth athousand words.” Like other art, photographsprovide experience. They place the viewer in amoment in time and convey the message of thatmoment.But what happens when nonprofit organizationsneed quality photos to tell their stories yet do nothave resources to acquire really good images tocommunicate with clients, community partners andpotential donors?Betting that nonprofit agencies would appreciatetapping into a source of professional photography,Piper Trust launched Picturing Maricopa, a 2009project linking nonprofits with photographers. Theproject builds on a model from Northern IndianaCommunity Foundation.15 Photographers/15 NonprofitsAn advisory committee of three art andphotography curators selected 15 photojournalistsand art and commercial photographers from a poolof 50 who applied for the project.Curators linked each photographer with one of15 agencies, and Piper Trust hired thephotographers to take photos of the agencies. All15 nonprofits are serving emergency and basicneeds in the current recession when needs haveskyrocketed and resources plummeted.The resulting photographs are now available toeach agency to use for publicity, annual reports andwebsites. They have full rights to use the photos foryears to come.Forty-two framed photographs comprise atraveling Picturing Maricopa exhibit. The showopened in October 2009 at Burton-Barr CentralLibrary in downtown Phoenix and then moved onto the Mesa Arts Center in January. The freeexhibition will hang at the Scottsdale PublicLibrary, Drinkwater Boulevard, from March 5 toApril 9, and at the Glendale Public Library, BrownAvenue, from April 12 to June 30.The selection of photographs on the followingpages represents each photographer and agency.These images convey a powerful message aboutmeeting needs in the community during tougheconomic times. ✱4
