Residential collegeson your doorstep<strong>Graduate</strong> students at the residential colleges are part <strong>of</strong>a uniquely supportive academic community, while livingright near the <strong>University</strong>‘s Parkville campus.Janet Clarke HallA COMPLETE UNIVERSITYEXPERIENCEFor graduate students, the residentialcolleges provide not only a placeto live convenient to the Parkvillecampus, but a complete learningexperience that will enhance yourgraduate studies. <strong>Graduate</strong>s are <strong>of</strong>feredseminars, small tutorials tailored to theircourses, mentoring, and networkingopportunities as part <strong>of</strong> their residency.The colleges give graduate studentsthe opportunity to be as involved incollege life as they wish, and <strong>of</strong>ten havegraduate-specific events in additionto whole-college activities as part <strong>of</strong> avibrant social, sporting and academicprogram.<strong>Graduate</strong>s can also become seniormembers <strong>of</strong> leadership groups,mentor younger students, and caneven become tutors to reduce fees.Attending a residential college canopen doorways in a graduate‘scareer, a unique aspect <strong>of</strong> the collegeexperience.YOUR HOMEThe colleges <strong>of</strong>fer a wide range <strong>of</strong>purpose-built graduate accommodationonly a stone‘s throw away from the<strong>University</strong>, including single en suiterooms, self-contained flats and sharedapartments and houses with othergraduate students. Many <strong>of</strong> these havebeen very recently built.All colleges have both male andfemale residents who come to collegefrom a diverse range <strong>of</strong> backgroundsand locations. Residents mostly dinetogether in their college‘s dining hall, agreat place for the community to cometogether, and for taking a break fromthe day‘s studies.Around$3.5millionin financial assistancefor college residents in 2013All rooms are fully furnished, andhave internet and phone connections.Communal areas include music rooms,sporting and recreational areas, librariesand IT labs, many <strong>of</strong> which are open 24/7.Typically, college residence is for 35to 52 weeks a year, with students‘different study periods taken intoconsideration. Some colleges <strong>of</strong>ferlimited accommodation suitable tocouples and families.HOW TO APPLY<strong>Students</strong> thinking about applying fora college place are encouraged tovisit each college‘s website, to checkwhich <strong>of</strong> the colleges <strong>of</strong>fer the kind<strong>of</strong> graduate experience the student islooking for. When applying, studentschoose one college as their firstpreference, and list the rest in order <strong>of</strong>preference, to ensure the best chance<strong>of</strong> receiving a place.SCHOLARSHIPS ANDFINANCIAL ASSISTANCEThe colleges aspire to make the collegeexperience accessible to all and will <strong>of</strong>ferover $3.5 million in scholarships andbursaries in 2013. Financial assistanceusually takes the form <strong>of</strong> a reductionin fees.
