30 31 The futureImprintECORD still has many plans.Further mission-specificplat<strong>for</strong>m expeditions are beingorganised and new technologiesare being tested. Preparationsare being made to implementexpeditions to the shallowocean shelf off the coast of NewJersey and the Australian GreatBarrier Reef in 2009. The goalof both expeditions is to studythe variations in sea levels overtime. The targets of the IODPresearchers in the New JerseyShallow Shelf Expedition are the20-million-year-old sand layers.The voyage to the Great BarrierReef is a continuation of theTahiti Sea-Level Expedition.Global climate change, rapidlyrising demands <strong>for</strong> raw materialsand natural hazards suchas earthquakes, tsunamis andvolcanic eruptions are puttingthe continuously growing worldpopulation at risk. A better understandingof these processesis the great challenge <strong>for</strong> earthsciences. Mankind is facingpivotal questions.
