The fund also supportsthe NTRIB awards. The fund and the work <strong>of</strong> the board are aimed atsupporting, stimulating and fostering research and innovation as part <strong>of</strong> thedevelopment <strong>of</strong> a <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Territory</strong> knowledge-based economy. A principalobjective is to build resident research capacity and to draw researchinvestment into the <strong>Territory</strong>. The fund is held in trust by the Charles DarwinUniversity.The board is currently reviewing its role to maximise the leverage itachieves in supporting the research and innovation initiatives that are <strong>of</strong>economic, social and environmental benefit to the <strong>Territory</strong> and its citizens.The fund’s balances are as follows:NT Research and Innovation Fund – Balance as at 30 June 2010Committed funds¹ $839 376Uncommitted funds² $166 545Funds held in trust by Charles Darwin University $1 005 921¹ Funds which have been awarded by the NTRIB and approved by theMinister for <strong>Business</strong> and Employment, to research and innovation projectapplicants since the inception <strong>of</strong> the program but not yet expended.² Funds retained to cover NTRIB approved initiatives.<strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Business</strong> and Employment Annual Report 2009–10191
