Then it spread to the Internet, local newspapers, journals, magazines, and finally aroundthe world. A major discovery of a new fossilizedimpression of not just one, but three ancientamphibians, was announced. The find came notby digging in the mud, but through the keenobservance and the trained eyes of our very ownDr. Edward Simpson ’80, of the Department ofPhysical Sciences, and KU graduate DavidFillmore ’05.Released last November at the annual meeting of the Geological Societyof America, the discovery is thought to be one of the oldest full-bodyimprints of land-living amphibians. The researchers found the imprintsin sandstone rocks which had been collected from the Mauch ChunkFormation decades ago and stored in the Reading Museum. (See page 21.)Discoveries like this do not occur every day. But when they do, we are allbenefactors. At KU, part of our mission is to help students discover themselves outsidethe classroom through field studies, sporting events, stage performances, gallery exhibitions, and more. These activities not only enhance theacademic environment, but also enrich our lives as the hard work put inthe classroom, in the field, or in rehearsal comes to full fruition. No one issue of the Tower can contain all the special activities that occuron campus every year. The best we can hope for is a snap shot, an invitationto learn more, and the satisfaction of knowing that KU faculty, students, staff, and alumni are contributing in large and small ways every day.F.
