Even after more than thirty-five years in education, I still feel an
exhilarating enthusiasm for the beginning of a new school year. After
serving as the KMC principal this past year, I look forward more than
ever to another promising beginning. To serve as the facilitator of your
children’s academic, social and religious formation is truly a privilege.
I pledge to you that I will continue to fulfill my duties in a spirit of
compassion, sincerity and fairness. To be a part of a school “dedicated
to the education and formation of the total person in the image of Jesus
Christ” is truly the ultimate opportunity in my educational career.
During this past year, I found your children’s teachers to be truly
dedicated, conscientious and professional individuals with a resolve to
expect and solicit exceptional performance from their students. As I
visited the classrooms, I was impressed with the teachers and their
commitment to helping your children realize their greatest potential. I
feel confident that the new teachers will have the same sense of
dedication. My plan is to continue to support the teachers and you in
providing the best education possible for our young people.
Serving you and your children this past year has truly been pleasurable.
Even in times of crisis, I look forward to each day. I consider my work
as truly a gift from God to have the opportunity to meet and serve so
many genuinely gracious, reverent and generous young people. You
parents certainly deserve to take real pride in the commendable
parenting that you have provided them. All children should be so
fortunate!
I hope all of you are looking forward to a productive year both in
academics and extra curricular activities. KMC has a rich heritage in
each of these areas that I know, with your continued support, we can
continue to enhance.

A A note note from from . . . . . . Cameron Carlson,

Dear KMC Parents,
As I begin my fourth year at KMC, I am continually amazed by the
upbeat atmosphere each year offers. For the past two years, I have
been blessed to work with the high school youth through Student
Council (STUCO). The exuberance that these young people bring
to KMC focuses my attention on the things that are important to
them. Each year, the students determine their goals for the following
year. With several sub-goals that support one direction, this year’s
main goal is to increase and promote school spirit.
While “school spirit” historically means cheering at games and
developing pride in the school, “school spirit” is something to be
seen and felt. When grappling with the question of how the
students will know at the end of this year that they were
successful in accomplishing their goal, they have tied their
increased school spirit to an increased connectivity with each
other and the school. One might ask, how do we measure a
feeling? Or, how do we know that students are connected? The
answer, though tenuous, is met with another feeling – that the
atmosphere around here is warm, welcoming and inviting.
Some changes student leaders have adopted are:
• STUCO is open to everyone. To become an active member,
a student needs only to attend 3 meetings. Meetings are
held on Tuesdays before school twice a month.
• Each class has it own bulletin board where the primary
communication regarding STUCO activities will take place.
• Class Representatives are assigned to each new student who
transfers to KMC other than freshmen.
• Each Officer has defined duties that relate to the ongoing
function of STUCO to serve the student body.
• A huge emphasis prevails to develop teamwork skills –
leadership opportunities await those who volunteer to take
charge. Even if a student is not an elected member of
STUCO, a member at large has the same responsibilities as
those elected. While we have several activities planned, we
need everyone to take the lead to carry them out!
Aside from our gut-level hunches, the only sure way we know
when we’re not meeting the needs of the students is through
open dialogue and communication with parents and students.
While STUCO’s goals and corresponding activities to get
everyone involved will open many doors, please let us know
how STUCO and the rest of the school is doing to meet your
student’s needs as you become aware of them, or if you see things
that we could be doing that we may not have thought of yet. An
email, voicemail or a phone call is always welcome and a quick
way for us to know what adjustments we need to make.
I am so incredibly impressed by our young people as they
continually tackle the task to improve the school. They are a
true blessing. With their increased involvement, this year will
be great!

A few notes on school rules. . .
New agenda book. The new agenda book will house much
of the same content as in years past. The format we’ve chosen
with our new service provider will feature a sturdier binding, a
student-generated cover and activities listed on the same page
as the student homework reminder page. It looks good!
Cell phones. To discourage classroom disruptions and the
use of text messaging during tests and similar class work, cell
phones will not be allowed in classrooms this year. They must
be left in students’ lockers or cars during the school day.
Coats/Jackets. In very cold weather, coats or jacket may be
worn to school, but they must be removed and placed in lockers
during school hours. Only school approved uniform sweaters,
sweatshirts, and letter jackets will be allowed during school
hours. Sweatshirts are available through the KMC spirit store.
Sweaters are available through Parker Uniforms.
School pictures. School pictures for freshmen, sophomores
and juniors will be on Monday, August 23 rd . This is a dress-up
day for these three classes. Senior pictures will be on the second
day of registration, August 17 th . Please dress up – coats and ties
for guys and dresses for girls. Fall Sports pictures will be on
Saturday, August 21 st at 8:00 am.
Late Starts. On the first and third Wednesdays of each month
(September through November and January through April) school
will start at 9:00 am for students, instead of at 7:50 am as
normally scheduled. Parents Club will provide a latchkey/study
hall for students who need to be dropped off at the normal time.
School Improvement. This is our fourth year of our fiveyear
accreditation cycle. This means that we are in the process
this year of gathering data for our three school improvement
goals: Reading, Critical Thinking, and Stewardship. We are very
pleased with the progress that we’ve made in each of the three
goal areas. Thank you all for your continued support of the North
Central Association Accreditation process.
Stewardship Hours. Last month, the Stewardship Team sent
out a letter that explains the process for accumulating
stewardship hours. Two highlights: Community Service hours
(for seniors) must be pre-approved by Fr. Weldon. Everyone will
need to be caught up on their required service/stewardship hours
at the beginning of each year for their grade-level.

Please start the school year off right by helping out at school
registration August 16 and 17! Moms and dads are both
welcome. You can call Amy Marshall, KMC bookkeeper, at 634-
0315, ext. 115, for information and specific assignments. A
couple of hours or more would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Dear KMC parents and prospective
parents,
It is with bittersweet feelings that I write my final letter to you as
the Director of Development at Kapaun Mount Carmel Catholic
High School. Effective August 2, 2004, I assume the job of
Director of Development and Planned Giving for the Catholic
Diocese of Wichita. While I am very excited about this new
opportunity and challenge, it is difficult to think about leaving
KMC, where I have been for 3 ½ years.
This job has truly been a blessing in my life - to be a part of the
faculty and staff who are so dedicated to making KMC the very
best Catholic school it can be; a member of one of the many
parishes who supports KMC by sending their kids to this school;
and a parent who has been able to watch with great pride the
accomplishments of our student body. I have had the
tremendous fortune to work with some of the best parents,
alumni, grandparents and parents of alums in this city, creating
new and exciting programs to benefit KMC.
And certainly never to be forgotten, the students at KMC – the
most rewarding part of this job is to be here to see them grow
and mature spiritually, academically and socially. I am so proud
of them and all that they have done for this school and will
continue to do as they graduate and join us as alumni.
My wife has said that, although the hours can be long, she could
tell how much I enjoyed my work here. Thanks to each of you
for the support you have shown me, for your active participation
in the school, for the way that you work to make the high school
experience one that your children will remember and most
especially, for your continued determination to make possible a
Catholic education for each and every Catholic student in east
Wichita and western Butler county.
We are currently in the process of filling this position and will
hopefully have this person on board very soon. During the
transition, I have committed to be available to get the school
year started and to ensure a clean and effective transition period.
And, of course, I will continue to see many of you at the various
events that bring us together during the year.
I have so much to be thankful for in my life. I certainly count
among my richest blessings the opportunity to work with each
of you and your students at Kapaun Mount Carmel Catholic High
School.

Student Body President
I hope that everyone’s summer was wonderful! Among the
students, there is a huge amount of loyalty towards KMC. Even
if things haven’t always been great, no one would dream of
attending another school. So, if we are proud or our alma mater,
why is it difficult to see school spirit unless we are competing
with Bishop Carroll?
School Spirit is the focus of your student government this year.
Last year, we spent considerable time asking for your input, and
as a result, a number of changes are planned for the upcoming
school year. The students wanted more information and to be
involved, so all students are invited to help with planning and
participating in STUCO activities. In addition, bulletin boards
will be positioned throughout the school to keep you informed
of upcoming events and the latest Class Of The Year (COTY)
standings. So, I encourage each of you to get involved in at
least one STUCO activity as it will help your class’s COTY
standing. Get into school spirit as there is something for
everyone. We may just start some new traditions! I’m looking
forward to seeing you on the 19 th .

LUNCH ON THE FIRST DAY FOR FRESHMEN
Lunch will be provided for the freshmen on their first day at
KMC, which is Wednesday, August 18, at no cost.
FRESHMAN PARENTS ICE CREAM SOCIAL
The Parents Club invites all new students and their parents to
our annual Ice Cream Social, Tuesday, August 17th at 7:00 pm
in the KMC Courtyard! President Mike Burrus and the
administrative team will be serving ice cream. We understand
they are awfully good with an ice cream scoop! Come find
out for yourselves! This is a great opportunity to meet other
parents and students, and to get to know your Kapaun
administrators. We’ll see you there!
FRESHMAN ORIENTATION NIGHT
Wednesday, August 18, 7:00 pm, all parents of freshmen are
asked to attend this meeting to hear more about your child’s
experience at KMC.
BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHT & ACTIVITIES FAIR
Thursday, September 2, 7:00 pm, we encourage all parents to
take advantage of this opportunity for you to follow your
student’s schedule of classes (10 minutes each) and to meet
the teachers. Students may accompany their parents. Also
that evening, all students will have the opportunity to learn
about the many clubs and activities available to them.
UNIFORMS
Uniform regulations are outlined in the school agenda book.
Parker Uniform in Carriage Parkway provides any KMC uniform
item you may require. Parents Club will be selling used
uniforms during registration.
KMC APPAREL
KMC spirit apparel will be on sale during registration. Students
wishing to dress out of uniform on “Spirit Days” (identified in
the school calendar) are required to wear a KMC-approved
spirit shirt and jeans or single-color pants. They must also
purchase a $1.00 Spirit Day pass. The proceeds of this pass
go to support the many fine clubs and activities at KMC.
PARENTS PLEDGE
In an effort to assist parents in curtailing under-age drinking,
the Parents Club compiles a Parents Pledge list, which appears
in the KMC School Directory. You can sign the pledge at
registration (August 16 & 17) and Back-to-School Night (Sept
2). The pledge is printed in this issue of the Crusader
Connection on page 8.
LUNCH TICKETS
Latour Management provides our hot entrée and cold lunch
selections in the Crusader Café. A lunch/I.D. prepaid card or
cash will be accepted for payment. Latour prefers that students
make payments on their card mornings only, before the school
day begins.
MEDICATIONS
If students need to take medication at school, a form will be
available at registration. Complete the form and return it to
school on the first day of classes.
NEW PARENT/STUDENT TIPS

STUDENT I.D. NUMBER
Each student will be assigned their own Student I.D. number
their freshman year. This is the student’s identification all
four years at KMC and also appears on their lunch card. No
student may use another student’s I.D. number.
FRESHMAN PARENT REPRESENTATIVES
The Parents Club Board is structured to include representatives
from each class. Any parent may run for these positions.
SERVICE HOURS REQUIRED FOR GRADUATION
Each year we ask our students to earn stewardship hours
in four categories: Family, Church/Parish, School/PSR and
Community. At the end of their senior year, the student
must have earned a minimum 80 hours and, as a senior,
served at least once at The Lord’s Diner. While we
encourage students to work ahead on hours they will need
in upcoming years at Kapaun, all students must complete
the minimum number of hours in specific categories as
they complete each year of school.
During the freshman year, students will need to earn 10
hours in Family Service. What the student has learned
while earning these hours will be discussed in his/her
Morality class. By the end of their sophomore year,
students will be required to have completed 15 hours in
Church/Parish Service. These hours will be tied to their
Liturgy class. By the end of their junior year, students will
be required to earn 20 hours in School/PSR Service
which will then be discussed in their Apologetics class.
And by the end of their senior year, students will be
required to earn 35 hours (pre-approved by Fr. Jim
Weldon) in Community Service which will be reviewed
in their Catholic Social Doctrine class. Seniors will also
be required to serve one night at The Lord’s Diner.
The completion of the required hours for each grade level
will be tied directly to the student’s second semester
Theology grade.
The hours listed above are the minimum hours for each
category. We encourage our students to continue earning
service hours in all categories even though the minimum
hours have been met. Students who have already
completed the required hours for a category will only be
asked to review their service hours in the related Theology
class. For example, a sophomore who has already earned
15 Church/Parish service hours as a freshman will not be
required to earn an additional 15 Church/Parish service
hours. All students will be expected to have earned the
minimum required hours in all categories through their
current grade level. For example, a junior will be expected
to have completed the minimum hours in Family, Church/
Parish and School/PSR service by the close of the 2004-
05 school years.
All record keeping will continue to be conducted through
Linda Toon, the registrar. All stewardship forms will be
available in her office for students to pick up and return
once completed. Please contact Mrs. Toon should you
require clarification as to what constitutes hours for a
specific category

Be active in Parents Club
Are you aware that each one of you is a member of KMC
Parents Club? We would like to invite all of the members to
attend our monthly meetings every 2nd Wednesday, at 7:00
pm in the school library.
Parents Club is an organization dedicated to supporting
students, fellow parents and the staff of Kapaun Mt Carmel.
Throughout the year, Parents Club helps enrich the quality of
student life and education through various volunteer efforts.
Teacher-of-the-Year awards
Kapaun Mt Carmel Parents Club is proud to recognize
excellence in the classroom with its second annual Teacherof-the-Year
awards. The awards, sponsored by the KMC
Parents Club, are presented in two categories, New Teacher
(less than three years at Kapaun) and Experienced Teacher
(three or more years).
We are proud to announce Ben Sperry has been honored as
the New Teacher of the Year. Mr. Sperry teaches in the English
Department. Duwane Miller of the Fine Arts Department is
the 2003-04 Veteran Teacher of the Year. For the first year,
Parents Club also recognized a non-faculty member, who was
Gary Heath, Facilities Manager. Parents Club member Mary
Jenkins announced each award winner at the Senior
Convocation in May 2004. The Parents Club wants to thank
all teachers at Kapaun Mt. Carmel and to congratulate these
three leaders.

Parents Pledge
The Parents Club would like to thank parents for participating
in the Parents Pledge. It is the sincere hope of the Parents
Club that the listing in the student phone directory will enable
us all to insure the safety of our students through the signing
and commitment to this pledge. The directory is not a legal
document and is not legally binding on the Parents Club or
KMC school administration.
By signing the Parents Pledge, KMC parents pledge the
following:
I will not allow parties in my home without adult
supervision.
I will not provide nor allow the use of alcoholic
beverages for anyone under the legal drinking age at a
party in my home.
If I am the host parent of a social gathering, I will attempt
to contact the parents of anyone possessing, or under
the influence of, drugs or alcohol.
As a parent of a minor invited to a social gathering, I
will contact the host parents to verify the occasion and
parental supervision.
I will inform my son/daughter(s) that I have signed this
pledge, and I will discuss its contents with him/her/
them.
