57A SUDANESE SWORD (KASKARA) AND TWO AFRICANTHROWING KNIVES (HUNGA MUNGA)the first with broad blade formed with a rounded point and cutwith a slender fuller on each side, engraved brass hilt ofcharacteristic form, comprising a pair of straight quillons, andfaceted grip rising to a swollen pommel, in its woodenscabbard entirely encased in embossed sheet silver, with twosuspension mounts each stamped with a mark; the secondand third with recurved blades, each engraved with stylisedanimals and geometric patterns, and the grips bound with hidethe first: 89cm; 35in blade(3)Sir (Bernard) Humphrey Bell was the second son of The Rev.J.T. Bell, headmaster of Christ’s Hospital School, Hertford, andwas born in 1884. After attending Christ’s Hospital School, heobtained a scholarship to Trinity College, Cambridge,graduating BA in 1906 and joining the Sudan Political Service in1907. In 1912, he married Lilian Constance Bagot, daughter ofThe Rev. G.P. Dew, and in 1917 became a barrister at Gray’sInn. Between 1918 and 1923 he served in Baghdad, first asPresident of the Court of First Instance and then as Presidentof the Court of Appeal. In 1923, he returned to the Sudan asJudge of the High Court – having been appointed aCommander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in thatyear – and became Chief Justice of the Sudan in 1926; hereceived the insignia of the second class of the Order of theNile from the King of Egypt in 1929. Between 1930 and 1936,he served as Legal Secretary to the Government of the Sudan,after which he retired, being created a Knight Commander ofthe Order of the British Empire (KBE) in 1937. During theSecond World War, he served as Assistant Legal Advisor to theHome Office and, his wife having predeceased him in thesame year, died in Hampshire in 1959.£1000-15005723
