Feature Page 4Unfolding the facts behind superstitionsThere is no shortage of supersitions inthe world - walking under ladders, spillingsalt, and opening umbrellas inside thehouse are all activities that are rumoredto bring bad luck. They are so common,in fact, that some people may not evenbelieve them to be superstitions, and justconsider them common fact. Superstitionsare, in general, hard to date, and it’s mostlyunclear where they originated from. The number 13 is considered to be theunluckiest of numbers, but the exact reasoninghas become lost through thousandsof years of human records. One of the firstdocumentations of its misfortune comesfrom ancient Egpyt. People there believedlong ago that there were 13 stages of life-12 on Earth and one more in the afterlife. This contributed to their belief that 13was synonymous with death, and so hascome to be considered unlucky even inmodern times. Friday the 13th is calledthe unluckiest day of the year due partly torecords that tell of awful things happeningon that day in history, such as the arrest of13Rachel LampiReporterthe Knights Templar, a Christian militaryorder in the 12th century. Many people willnot even leave the house on Friday the 13thfor fear of something bad happening tothem. The superstition about 13’s unluckynature has become so pronounced andwell-known that popular movies, books, and television series have begun to use itas a tactic to frighten people.Another fairly common superstition isthat of black cats. In theory, it is supposedto be unlucky when they cross the streetin front of someone. Cats in general arethought to bring bad luck in Italy and theNetherlands, but the color specificationsorginated in seventeenth-century Massachusettsduring the Salem Witch Trials.Black cats were often said to be witchesin disguise, or companions of those whopracticed sorcery. When a black cat wouldcome near, it was an omen of death andmisfortune, and in some cities the mythwent so far as to put death sentences onanyone found in possession of a black catas a pet. This eventuallyevolved into the more commonly knownbelief that breaking a mirror will earn theperson who breaks it seven years of badluck. Another potential source for this notioncomes from the mirror’s former statusas an object that could only be affordedfor the wealthy. If an indentured servant, broke a mirror while cleaning it for thefamily then it would mean bad luck. The world is riddled with these typesof myths and folk tales, and are a large partof cultures across the globe. Each club was founded thisyear on student initiative with an eyetowards creating a healthy lifestyleamong the current generation.Rollerblading club, founded byseniors Emma Blackwell and DillonConwell, created the club out ofbuilding on their favorite activity:Rollerblading. This waswhen rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep wasdiscovered, and pioneer scientists NathanielKleitman and William Dement’s experimentproved a correlation between REM sleep anddreaming. Since then, numerous sleep studieshave been conducted with an attempt togather knowledge and explain many of thelifestyle that will carry through to our nations futuregenerations?” responded senior Emma Blackwellwhen asked about who should join the club. The group plans to start rollerblading retrainingclasses, and eventually, contests and races to see theextent of ones skills.Another group that is growing up around fitnessis the P90X club, organized by Brandon Reichertand Jeff Rogers. The club, based around the popularworkout program developed by Tony Horton, wantsto bring in kids who have not had the time, place orcommunity to do a regular fitness program.“P90X is for the kids who want to live the fitlifestyle without the pressures of sport” said sophomoreBrandon Reichert .The workouts, which are based around the fitnessidea of muscle confusion, work all parts of amysteries that still surround the perplexityof dreaming. Moreover, dream studies have takenplace to peruse the spiritual and emotionalconnection with dreams. Some are convincedthat dreams can have secret or supernaturalmeaning. This theory dates allthe way back to the ancient Egyptians andGreeks who thought that the gods and goddessesspoke to the human soul throughdreams. It has been proven that dreamsare linked to the human subconscious, butscientists are still unsure whether dreamsphysiologically reflect one’s innermostpsyche, although many have thought thisideology to be unquestionably true.Psychologist Sigmund Freud says inThe Interpretation of Dreams, that “Thereis a psychological technique which makesit possible to interpret dreams, and... if thatprocedure is employed, every dream revealsitself as a psychical structure whichperson’s body. Different videos in thehome workout program address differentparts of the body on different days, never allowing muscles to rest and forcingthem to adapt to the high stress excercises. Each tape features the trainerTony Horton, who spends his time oncamera not only doing the workout, butencouraging participants to push themselves. The same things that attractedseniors Jeff Rogers to the program willatrract you.“The musclebound infomercials attractedme to the high intensity muscleconfusion workouts. The results speakfor themselves” said the extraordinarilybuff Rogers.has a meaning and which can be inserted atan assignable point in the mental activitiesof waking life.”Another aspect of oneirology that puzzlesscientist is the recent discovery of luciddreaming. Lucid dreaming is when a personis aware that they are dreaming. This allowsthe dreamer to not only actively participatein the dream, but control the events, people, and environment that the dream is centeredaround. Ordinary dreams are often not remembered, have no connection to reality, and have no concept of time, but none ofthese traits apply to lucid dreams. Luciddreams are also connected to false awakeningand even cognitive skills.Poe concludes that “The realities of theworld affected me as visions... while thewild ideas of the land of dreams became,in turn,—not the material of my every-dayexistence--but in very deed that existenceutterly and solely in itself.”

Review Page 10Haunted housessparkthrillsMany events are gradually opening upthis month to celebrate the season of Halloween. The most highly anticipated events ofthis year are the haunted houses. Oklahoma’stop-rated list of haunted houses include theCastle of Muskogee and Nightmare. Hundredsof tickets are sold for each venue. The Castle of Muskogee has two hauntedhouses, a haunted trail through the woods, anda frightening maze. The two haunted housestake place in the castle, while the maze andtrail take place outdoors. Souvenirs are availablefor purchase to forever be reminded ofthe horrifying thrill and experience of thewalk through the haunted houses. When people wait in line for the indoorattractions, they can hear screams frompeople inside the event that echo through thewalls. When they hear the screams their anxietyrises as they wait to enter. Toward the endof walking through the haunted house, theynever fail to bring out a man with a chainsawwho chases the frightened visitors out of theentire venue. The most popular event at the CastleIt is not often in the world of literature that abook receives such wide acclaim before its scheduledrelease date as The Night Circus. But alreadythis book is taking publishing by storm. The debut novel of Erin Morgenstern, TheNight Circus features a circus, called Les Cirquesdes Reves, that opens at midnight and closes atdawn. It is designed as a series of interlocking circulartents, rather than one large one, and is entirelyblack, white, and gray, sprinkled with tiny lightsresembling stars. The circus’s purpose, however, is not to entertainthe public, but to provide a place for twomen to compete in a long-standing game. They donot compete themselves, but instead use a series ofapprentices - in this case, Celia, a daughter of oneof Muskogee is the Trail of Blood. The Trailof Blood is a haunted trail that leads into thedark woods. People in frightening costumesleap out of bushes and send people’s innocentshrieks into the night sky. The trail is consideredthe most favorable and scariest attractionheld at the Castle of Muskogee. The other highly-ranked haunted house isNightmare. Nightmare is a haunted house thatis just as frightening as the Castle. Unlike theCastle of Muskogee, Nightmare has more ofan emotional storyline to the event rather thanjust for scare. Although it is not as diversein events, it is one intimate story that leavespeople walking out of the event feeling scared, but inspired.“The scariest room was the Hell room. There were demons who touch you and makeyou feel uncomfortable. Overall, Nightmareteaches teens useful lessons in a realistic way,”senior Ana Torbati said. The moral at the end of Nightmare leavespeople in awe. Although both venues differ inmany ways, they are both known for the thrillthat they inflict upon people. -Amy PrittThe Night Circus combines magic and mysteryof the players, and Marco, a boy takenin off the streets. They must competeagainst each other as players in thegame until one or the other of themdies, marking the other the winner ofthe game. But things quickly becomeeven more dangerous when it appearsthat Celia and Marco might be falling inlove.Other characters populate the novelas well, and they are just as memorableas the players. They are all circus performers, but have the same etherealquality of the circus itself, and contributeto its magnetic attraction, from contortioniststo illusionists who all seem topossess something of the supernaturaland mysterious.Throughout the novel’s plotline aresmall chapters written in second person,to help envision the circus as Morgensternherself sees it. The plot itself isnot sequential, though, and it can besometimes confusing to keep the variedtimelines straight. The Castle of Muskogee (top) looks formalon the outside, but judging the outsidedoes not portray the scares on the inside(picture above).Morgenstern’s style of writing isjust as dreamy and haunting as the subjectshe has chosen to write about. Shewrites about flames “the color of pumpkins”and a clock that features “a tinyprincess in a carved tower who pacesin distress, awaiting an absent prince”.It is almost like a fairy tale, rather thana science fiction novel, and is alreadybeing compared to showstopping fantasynovels such as Harry Potter andTwilight. Rumors of a movie are alreadyin circulation despite its recent release inthe middle of September. For those who are intrigued bymagic, or are simply looking for a goodbook, The Night Circus comes highlyrecommended. The powerful reactionsalone from reviewers are enough todrive it, but even these are not reallyneeded. The characters, plot, and stylewill keep the pages turning long afterbedtime - for really if any book shouldbe read at night, there is none better thanthis one.-Rachel Lampi

Music Page 12Musical styles convergeNatalie MillerReporterMusic seems to be one thing that everyone loves. However, withso many artists out there, it is impossible to know every song. And what about those bands that are amazing and full of talent, butfor some reason have not become well known yet? Sometimes it isbands like these that end up leaving the biggest impressions.“I really like The Civil Wars. They’re country with a little bit ofan alternative feel,” senior Nicole McGuire said when asked whatlesser know band she has grown to like.Branching out in music is something that everyone can try. Solet us see what other great singers are out there. What about JasonMraz? An alternative to him would be Jack Johnson. The peacefulmelodies and clever lyrics are all still there, but with a differentvoice. The Band Perry makes great songs that might please someTaylor Swift lovers, and there are plenty of pop artists out there tosatisfy everyone. There are even alternatives to Lil Wayne. Lil Zanehas a similar style of rap that can satisfy Wayne fans looking forsomething slightly different.Pandora is an easy to use site that opens people up to differentartists and music. It lets people name their favorite singers andsongs, and then creates a station for them that plays the music theynamed, and more music like it. This allows everyone to listen to themusic they want, while also branching out a little bit. It can be prettysurprising how much a person’s musical taste can change after beingexposed to new styles.
