Letter tothe editorDear Editor:I wanted to write to let you knowthat harvesters here in Harbour Bretonreally appreciated that the FFAW/CAWnegotiated lobster prices last spring.Lobster landings here, like most areas,were down this year but because therewas a negotiated price in place we knewthat for the first time lobster buyerscouldn’t drop the price on us or pay usless than what the market price was eachweek. This made a huge difference for us.For the first time ever in my area, wewere getting the same price for our lobsterthat every other area received. We are inan area of the province that is known fornot only receiving a lower price each yearcompared to Atlantic Canada, but wewere always paid lower than in other areasof our own province.I’m also pleased to know that whenbuyers tried to get rid of the system,everybody could finally see their truecolors. No longer could they pay whatthey called a ‘good price,’ even thoughthey said they were going to go bankrupt.I didn’t see that happen to one of them,did you?For once I see us having a fair systemthat truly benefits harvesters, not fishbuyers.
