<strong>Solemn</strong> <strong>Mass</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Liturgical</strong> <strong>Reception</strong><strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Most</strong> <strong>Reverend</strong> <strong>Mark</strong> ColeridgeSeventh Bishop <strong>and</strong> Sixth Archbishop <strong>of</strong> Brisbane11 May 2012Archbishop <strong>Mark</strong> Benedict Coleridge was born in Melbourne on 25 September 1948, <strong>the</strong> third<strong>of</strong> five children <strong>of</strong> Bernard Coleridge <strong>and</strong> Marjorie Harvey, both <strong>of</strong> whom are deceased.Archbishop Coleridge received his primary education in Adelaide <strong>and</strong> his secondary educationin Melbourne at Saint Kevin’s College, Toorak. After studies at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Melbourne, heentered <strong>the</strong> seminary at Corpus Christi College in 1969 <strong>and</strong> was ordained to <strong>the</strong> priesthood inSaint Patrick’s Ca<strong>the</strong>dral Melbourne on 18 May 1974.He served as Assistant Priest in various parishes <strong>of</strong> Melbourne before studying Sacred Scriptureat <strong>the</strong> Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome <strong>and</strong> Jerusalem. He <strong>the</strong>n taught at CatholicTheological College from 1985-88 before returning to <strong>the</strong> Pontifical Biblical Institutefor doctoral studies which he completed in 1992. He was appointed Master <strong>of</strong> CatholicTheological College in 1995, <strong>and</strong> in late 1997 he returned to Rome to serve as an <strong>of</strong>ficial <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Holy See’s Secretariat <strong>of</strong> State. In 2002, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop <strong>of</strong> Melbourne <strong>and</strong>titular Bishop <strong>of</strong> Teveste, receiving ordination on 19 June <strong>of</strong> that year.In 2004, he was appointed a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pontifical Council for Culture <strong>and</strong> Chair <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Roman Missal Editorial Committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> International Commission for English in <strong>the</strong>Liturgy. In 2006, he was named Chair <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> International Commission for <strong>the</strong> Preparation<strong>of</strong> an English-language Lectionary. In 2006 he was elected Chair <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Australian Bishops’Commission for Liturgy. He is also a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bishops’ Commission for Doctrine <strong>and</strong>Morals <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Permanent Committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bishops’ Conference.On 19 June 2006, he was appointed Archbishop <strong>of</strong> Canberra <strong>and</strong> Goulburn, <strong>and</strong> in 2008 hewas elected to <strong>the</strong> Post-Synod Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> XII Ordinary General Assembly <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Synod <strong>of</strong>Bishops on “The Word <strong>of</strong> God in Life <strong>and</strong> Mission <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church”.
