Solemn Mass and Liturgical Receptionof the Most Reverend Mark ColeridgeSeventh Bishop and Sixth Archbishop of Brisbane11 May 2012Archbishop Mark Benedict Coleridge was born in Melbourne on 25 September 1948, the thirdof five children of Bernard Coleridge and Marjorie Harvey, both of whom are deceased.Archbishop Coleridge received his primary education in Adelaide and his secondary educationin Melbourne at Saint Kevin’s College, Toorak. After studies at the University of Melbourne, heentered the seminary at Corpus Christi College in 1969 and was ordained to the priesthood inSaint Patrick’s Cathedral Melbourne on 18 May 1974.He served as Assistant Priest in various parishes of Melbourne before studying Sacred Scriptureat the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and Jerusalem. He then taught at CatholicTheological College from 1985-88 before returning to the Pontifical Biblical Institutefor doctoral studies which he completed in 1992. He was appointed Master of CatholicTheological College in 1995, and in late 1997 he returned to Rome to serve as an official of theHoly See’s Secretariat of State. In 2002, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Melbourne andtitular Bishop of Teveste, receiving ordination on 19 June of that year.In 2004, he was appointed a member of the Pontifical Council for Culture and Chair ofthe Roman Missal Editorial Committee of the International Commission for English in theLiturgy. In 2006, he was named Chair of the International Commission for the Preparationof an English-language Lectionary. In 2006 he was elected Chair of the Australian Bishops’Commission for Liturgy. He is also a member of the Bishops’ Commission for Doctrine andMorals and of the Permanent Committee of the Bishops’ Conference.On 19 June 2006, he was appointed Archbishop of Canberra and Goulburn, and in 2008 hewas elected to the Post-Synod Council of the XII Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod ofBishops on “The Word of God in Life and Mission of the Church”.
