<strong>IED</strong> Master <strong>Madrid</strong>European Master <strong>of</strong> Fine Art PhotographyProgramThe programme mainly stands out because<strong>of</strong> the quality <strong>of</strong> the faculty, the Europeanapproach <strong>of</strong> its contents and the collaborationwith international institutions. The syllabusembraces a wide range <strong>of</strong> subjects andexamples allowing students to gain anunclouded pr<strong>of</strong>essional picture <strong>of</strong> the sector.The course is divided into subject-basedmodules corresponding to the skills thateach pupil will acquire upon completion. Thecourse modules are as follows:Specific ModuleAll the areas that configure the specific skills<strong>of</strong> the course. The aim here is to train thestudents from a pr<strong>of</strong>essional perspectivein the essential technical and culturalknowledge required by the sector. These areascomprise a host <strong>of</strong> different subjects and formthe main body <strong>of</strong> the master’s course. Westand out from other the following contents:• Processes <strong>of</strong> Creativity• Photo-Books & Portfolio Review• Photographic Genres Revisited• Editing & Publishing• Archives and Collections• Authorial Identity• Media Art and Image Culture• New Documentary Style• Theoretical Workshops: The main aim <strong>of</strong> thetheoretical workshops module is to tacklecontemporary <strong>art</strong>istic <strong>photography</strong> from atheoretical standpoint through two types <strong>of</strong>workshop.The aim <strong>of</strong> the first type is to conduct ananalysis <strong>of</strong> the information contained withinphotographs, how photographs work, how theytake shape, and how they have evolved over theyears since the invention <strong>of</strong> <strong>photography</strong> in thenineteenth century, questioning the differentmethods employed across the centuries,which have been repeatedly reviewed andreinterpreted based on the geographic, cultural,social, economic and political variables <strong>of</strong> thephotographers and where they come from.The other type is aimed at raising awarenessand knowledge <strong>of</strong> photobooks, exploring thehistorical and theoretical aspects <strong>of</strong> <strong>art</strong>ists’books while also presenting and drawingdistinctions between the different uses <strong>of</strong><strong>photography</strong> featuring in <strong>art</strong>ists’ books.Students will analyse and discuss <strong>art</strong>ists inaccordance with the main subject areas andgood or bad uses <strong>of</strong> <strong>photography</strong> in <strong>art</strong>ists’books. This will help to familiarise them withbooks in general and with the different usesand functions <strong>of</strong> <strong>photography</strong> within <strong>art</strong>ists’books in p<strong>art</strong>icular.• Artistic Workshops: This module is essentiallyan opportunity to meet prominent figuresfrom the world <strong>of</strong> contemporary fine <strong>art</strong><strong>photography</strong>, who will accompany studentsas they carry out their own photographicwork through practical exercises featuringcourse content. This will enable students toincorporate different tools to open up creativealternatives for developing their own work.Cross-Curricular ModuleThis module aims to provide useful toolsto discuss about the specific modes andcapabilities <strong>of</strong> the contemporary <strong>art</strong>isticpr<strong>of</strong>ession, <strong>of</strong>fering the student a contentsupport in two fundamental axes for his/herfurther pr<strong>of</strong>essional development:• Multidisciplinary cultural activities: Studentswill have the opportunity to attend culturalactivities developed by <strong>IED</strong> <strong>Madrid</strong> wherethey will enter in contact with differentpr<strong>of</strong>essionals in order to learn otherperspectives and visions and broaden theircritical training• Knowledge taught through the <strong>IED</strong> <strong>Madrid</strong>online Campus platform in important areas<strong>of</strong> the philosophy <strong>of</strong> <strong>IED</strong> as sustainability ordesign’s historical critical conceptsFinal Project ModuleThe final project, a key p<strong>art</strong> <strong>of</strong> the programand essential to fulfil it, aims to research,analyze, develop and present a project as anintegrating exercise <strong>of</strong> the abilities acquiredduring the development <strong>of</strong> the master.This will entail the experience <strong>of</strong> creatingan original work suitable and fit for a<strong>photography</strong> exhibition.1415
