Aims <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Fellowship ProgramThe ISS Fellowship provided <strong>the</strong> opportunity to learn <strong>the</strong> <strong>techniques</strong> in smart assistive technologies,in particular:• To acquire skills in <strong>the</strong> <strong>design</strong> <strong>and</strong> integration <strong>of</strong> <strong>techniques</strong> used <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>development</strong> <strong>of</strong> latestassistive technology devices• To gain knowledge <strong>and</strong> skills <strong>of</strong> numerous signal processing methods involved in <strong>design</strong> <strong>and</strong><strong>development</strong> <strong>of</strong> smart assistive technology devices• To investigate current trend <strong>of</strong> research in BCI <strong>and</strong> smart assistive technology devices in Australia• To underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> hardware architecture <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>design</strong> <strong>of</strong> smart assistive devices• To assess <strong>the</strong> s<strong>of</strong>tware requirements <strong>for</strong> controlling <strong>the</strong> assistive devices using <strong>the</strong> bio-signals suchas electromyography (EMG)• To establish a better underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>and</strong> knowledge <strong>of</strong> integrating hardware with signal processings<strong>of</strong>tware <strong>for</strong> a wide range <strong>of</strong> smart assistive technology devices currently available in <strong>the</strong> market• To enhance an underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> various control algorithm <strong>techniques</strong> used <strong>for</strong> assistivetechnology devices such as <strong>the</strong> robotic h<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> smart robotic wheel chair• To <strong>design</strong> <strong>and</strong> develop prototype boards <strong>for</strong> acquiring EMG from both elderly people <strong>and</strong> amputeesto incorporate it in smart assistive technology devices• To create teaching plat<strong>for</strong>ms in Australian universities <strong>and</strong> TAFE institutes with a view to traininterested staff <strong>and</strong> students in <strong>the</strong> revolutionary technology in in<strong>for</strong>mation technology (IT) areas.67
