Bull sale season is my favorite time of year as springcalving is winding down and breeding season is around the corner. This is the time whenprogressive cattlemen dissect data, evaluate and select genetics that will influence theircow-herds for years to come.I cannot emphasize enough how important it is for producers to Age and Source Verifytheir calves. It is an easy process that will yield a guaranteed premium to the feeder on verifiedanimals of a $30.00 to $35.00 flat rate plus another $1.25 per hundred. This is not acarcass premium or a grid premium, it is a freebie. We are currently targeting a sale date inNovember which would assemble enough producers with enrolled program calves to attractthat elite group of cattle feeders that could take premiums to the next level. If you are interestedin making that happen this fall, let me hear from you; I would greatly appreciate yourinput. I know you do not want to hear this, but the days of selling a bawling calf directly offthe cow with no vaccination program is coming to an end.We’ve turned the fuel down on the bulls again this year. The fall bulls pastured on crabgrass after weaning and were fed 5 lbs. of a 14% cube throughout the summer. In Decemberthey were put on a 15% grain ration.After weaning, the spring bulls were also fed the 15% grain ration until January, at whichpoint, the ration was bumped to 25%.As cattle breeders driven by the never-ending pursuit of better females, you may havenoticed how heavily we are using DHD Traveler 6807 and N Bar Emulation EXT, two of thegreatest maternal sires of all time. The influence of EXT’s dam, N Bar Primrose 2424 (wholived to 24 years of age while maintaining flawless structure) has inspired us to focus on ourPrimrose cow families. The recent purchase of a 2424 clone has sent us back in time a littlebit in order to satisfy the thirst for those who want a downsized female that will flush easier.Again, I thank you for your interest in our breeding program and look forward to seeingyou sale day. That simply means that we reservethe right to collect semen on that bull. You are purchasing total possession and may handle the bull as you see fit. If weshould, at some point, decide that we would like to have semen from that bull, we will come get the bull, take him to becollected and return him to you at a time that is convenient and acceptable to you. Any expenses incurred in this venturewould be ours. If you purchase a bull that we have retained interest in and you would like to collect semen for your ownuse, then the semen and the expense of collecting the bull would be 100% yours.- 1 -
