King Harold marched his men 180 miles (288Km) in just four days and tothe Norsemen’s surprise, met them at Stam<strong>for</strong>d Bridge, 12miles out <strong>of</strong> York and defeated them in a battle inwhich, as legend has it in the battle <strong>for</strong> the bridge itself, a lone anonymous Viking held up the Saxons, givingthe Viking <strong>for</strong>ces time to arm themselves, until he was felled by a spear thrust from under the bridge.The bridge itself was probably between 2 to 5 feet in width.Bacchus Wood will commemorate this battle, and so the sides are drawn –The <strong>for</strong>ces <strong>of</strong> King Harold verses the <strong>for</strong>ces <strong>of</strong> King Harald Hardrada <strong>of</strong> Norway6
