Act III, Scene 2.Synopsis:<strong>Macbeth</strong> and his wife discuss their present state. Lady <strong>Macbeth</strong> is concerned that her husband seems tobe so anxious and caught up in deep thought. <strong>Macbeth</strong> replies that they are never safe until all of theirthreats are abolished. Particularly, he says, he fears Banquo. Lady <strong>Macbeth</strong> asks to know what he hasplanned for Banquo, but <strong>Macbeth</strong> gives no details.Notes:The relationship between the <strong>Macbeth</strong>s has changed. Lady <strong>Macbeth</strong> is no longer in control of theiraffairs. She sits back powerless and watches her husband become more and more involved in treachery.Her concern for Banquo shows that she isn’t <strong>prepared</strong> to involve herself in the wholesale bloodshed of<strong>Macbeth</strong>. She wanted the killing to end with Duncan.Lines 17-19: <strong>Macbeth</strong> is fearful of dreams -- he can’t distinguish between appearance and reality.Lines 26-34: appearance vs. reality.Lines 46-56: Again, <strong>Macbeth</strong> calls for darkness to hide his treachery.Questions:1. Banquo is killed while Fleance escapes.Questions:1. What does the murderer mean <strong>by</strong> this sentence: “We have lost the best half of our affair” (line21)?9
