“1000 years in 100 minutes”
A tour through time and space connecting the upper and Lower
towns: “Bock” promontory, Old Town, Wenceslas ring wall, valley of
the Alzette with its unique fortifications. The Council of Europe has
rated this promenade as an “outstanding” cultural itinerary.

Did you know…
… that the Bock Promontory is not only regarded as the
mythical founding place of Luxembourg City but also as the
legendary realm of Melusina, the mermaid? According to the
legend, Siegfried, the first count of Luxembourg, married a
mythical creature with the name of Melusina. He had promised
never to see his wife on Saturdays but jealousy had him break
his promise and thus he looked through the keyhole and saw
that his wife had a fishtail on Saturdays. Thereupon Melusina
vanished in the depths of the Alzette and was never to be seen
again, although she is said to appear on the Bock Promontory
every seven years.
vAubAN cIrculAr wAlk
The Vauban Circular Walk, named after the famous French fortress
builder Sébastien le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707), leads the visitor
through one part of the fortifications of the 17 th , 18 th and 19 th
centuries.

famous German author’s stay in our city in 1792: Fish Market,
Goethe Memorial, Corniche, lower town of Grund.
