City Library and ArchivesSouthampton City Library and Archives is a major information,knowledge and learning resource for people of all ages andbackgrounds living in Southampton and its surrounds. It has 150,000books to borrow, from special collections focusing on maritime andfamily history dating from 1199 to the present day. With searchabledatabases, DVDs and music CDs, a Business Information Centre,community information, Learn Direct courses to books for babies, it isa rich source of inspiration and ideas for around 250,000 people whouse them every year.GuildhallSouthampton Guildhall is the South’s largest multi-purposeentertainment venue. Having hosted some of the biggest namesin music from Pink Floyd and David Bowie, the present programmehas featured newer names such as Hard Fi, Manic Street Preachers,The Ting Tings, The Killers, Kaiser Chiefs & Amy Winehouse. With acapacity of 1,749, it faces directly onto Guildhall Square and lies atthe heart of the emerging Cultural Quarter and attracts an audienceof around 170,000 a year.Millais GalleryThe Millais Gallery is a public art programme run by SouthamptonSolent University committed to the exhibition of contemporaryvisual art, which addresses issues of relevance to culturally diversecommunities locally, regionally and nationally.
Historic city centre parksThe Watts and Andrews Parks wrap geographically around the CulturalQuarter to create places of relaxation and oasis that have beeninspiring visitors to the city for over 150 years. They are Grade II Listedon English Heritage’s Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. In 2001,Central Parks underwent a major restoration project substantiallyfunded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.Southampton Solent University Sir James Matthews BuildingThe Sir James Matthews Building fronts directly onto Guildhall Squareat the heart of the Cultural Quarter. It is home to a variety of seminarand teaching rooms, staff offices and lecture theatres. It also containsone of three IT Resource Centres with over 250 computers, theCentre for Professional Development in Broadcasting and MultimediaProduction with its state-of-the-art media facilities, the SouthamptonSolent University Conference Centre, Blackwells Book Shop and theCafe in the Square. A large range of students and businesses use thebuilding’s facilities.Mayflower TheatreThe Mayflower Theatre is one of the top three most successfulregional theatres in the United Kingdom and the largest theatre inthe South, seating 2,300 and attracting over 400,000 visitors eachyear. The Mayflower presents spectacular touring musicals, manydirect from the West End, plus opera, ballet and some of the biggestnames in popular music and comedy. These range from the WelshNational Opera and the Royal National Ballet to David Essex andthe Soweto Gospel Choir, French and Saunders and Darren Day. TheGantry building project has added essential extra space and facilities tothe venue.
