153 AN ORTHODOX CREEDwe need his Kingly Office, to subdue our Enemies; and deliver us Captivesout of the kingdom and power of Sin, and preserve us to his HeavenlyKingdom. 209 And thus (in our Nature) he living the life of the Law, andsuffering the penalty due to us, continually presents us at the Throne ofGrace, 210 so is a most wonderful and compleat Mediator for his Elect.XVIII. Article.Of Christ Dying for all Mankind.God the Father, out of his Royal Bounty, and Fountain of Love,when all Mankind was fallen by Sin, in breaking of the first Covenant ofWorks made with them in Adam, did chuse Jesus Christ, and sent him intothe World to die for Adam, or fallen Man. And God’s love is manifest to allMankind, in that he is not willing, as himself hath Sworn, and abundantlydeclared in his Word, that Mankind should perish eternally, 211 but wouldhave all to be Saved, and come to the knowledg of the Truth: And Christdied for all Men, and there is a sufficiency in his Death and Merits for theSins of the whole World, 212 and hath appointed the Gospel to be preachedunto all; 213 and hath sent forth his Spirit to accompany the Word, in orderto beget Repentance and Faith: 214 So that if any do Perish, it’s not for wantof the means of Grace manifested by Christ to them, but for the nonimprovementof the Grace of God, offered freely to them through Christin the Gospel. 215XIX. Article.Of the Agreement between the Old and New Testaments.<strong>The</strong> Gospel, or New Covenant, was held forth, or preached to theFathers, from Adam to Christ’s coming in the Flesh, 216 though it was revealedby sundry Degrees, and in diverse Manners, 217 in Types and Shadows,darkly; 218 yet it was the same Gospel, the same Christ, the same Faith(for kind), and the very same Covenant, that they were justified and savedby, before Christ took Flesh of the Virgin, that we have now, and is to2092 Tim. 4.18.
