4 <strong>Business</strong> <strong>Against</strong> <strong>Corruption</strong>the African Development Bank, the AsianDevelopment Bank, the European Bank <strong>for</strong>Reconstruction and Development, and theInter-American Development Bank Group—agreed in 2010 that if one MDB declares afirm or an individual ineligible <strong>for</strong> procurementcontracts because of fraud and corruption,then all the other MDBs will do thesame. In 2010 alone, the World Bank banneddozens of contractors guilty of corruptionfrom bidding on projects supported by WorldBank funds and launched its <strong>International</strong><strong>Corruption</strong> Hunters Alliance, which supportscorruption fighters internationally. A coalitionof investors, with funds totalling US $1.7trillion, requested in 2010 that companiesacross eight sectors and 14 countries improvetheir disclosure of corruption risks andresponses. Non-governmental organizationsfrom the global Transparency <strong>International</strong>movement to the Mombasa-based Muhari arebecoming ever more vigilant as more in<strong>for</strong>mationbecomes public, and the growth ofsuch initiatives has only begun.Companies are key participants in the fightagainst corruption and are expected to step upmore than ever be<strong>for</strong>e. Pressure is starting tobuild from within as much as from without.As detailed on the following pages, companiesshould proactively express their commitmentto corporate responsibility and voluntarilyfight corruption <strong>for</strong> reasons unrelatedto the potential legal ramifications of beingcaught in the act. The UN Global Compactserves as a learning and per<strong>for</strong>mance plat<strong>for</strong>mto assist companies in this endeavour. Only byfully implementing solid institutional policies,reporting on their implementation and engagingin collective action can companies be sufficientlyassured that the tinge of corruptionwill not apply to them. Only then can globallysustainable business truly succeed.
