Beautifulhome sites over-looked thecourse situated on 500 acres in thefoothills of the Uwharrie Mountains,and Red Bridge became quickly oneof the regions premiere golf andhome ownership destinations.With a downturn in the economycame a financial struggle to maintainand promote the course, and inthe past two years going bankruptwas a very realistic option. SinceMarch of this year however, the perseveranceof one man has saved thecourse, changed the appearance andboosted the attitude of the managementteam to look optimistically tothe future of the property.Long time real estate executiveGus Schad of Albemarle had beendirectly involved in the original financingof Red Bridge, and has investedwell over $1-million to makesure the golf course is financiallystable. With his “can-do” attitudeand his financial investments he refusedto let the golf course closewithout a fight. A non-golfer, Schadhas quickly started his planned improvementprograms that will takeRed Bridge to a new level.“I want to build a new clubhousewithin the coming year,” said Schadwhen speaking to the Carolina GolfJournal. “We have new golf cartscoming this fall and combined withthe other improvements andchanges, I expect Red Bridge to beone of the top-three nicest publiccourses in the Charlotte market asearly as next year.”To reach that goal Schad has contractedSignet Golf Associates to assistDirector of Golf Lew Farwell inreaching the full potential of thecourse. “Peter Dejak at Signet isdedicated to providing first classgolf facilities to all levels of golfersthrough a prudent, yet aggressive,management style that ensures costeffective use of resources, resultingin investor security and confidence.”Designed by Pete Dye protégéDavid Postlethwait, Red BridgeGolf Club is both challenging andappealing to golfers of all handicaplevels. At Red Bridge golfers play an unusual fivepar 5's, and five par 3's on this par-72 layout.course to install the MiniVerdeBermuda greens from the start whenit opened in 2008, the same greensthat many of the southeast golf clubshave been forced to install to saveputting surfaces and precious playtime in the summer.One excellent change at RedBridge has been the re-routing forthe first tee. The front nine " nowopens with a 412-yard par-4 thatruns along the vineyards of theRocky River Winery. This is amuch better startingplace than the 129-yardpar-3 original openinghole followed by areachable par-5 that createdan early log-jam.Those two holes arenow #5 and #6.An interesting part ofthe par-72 course is thatthere are five par-5’sand five par-3’s, withtwo of the par-5’s comingback-to-back at the3rd and 4th holes. Thefinal par-5 of the day isat the notorious 18thhole, the longest andtoughest holes in townstretching 619 yardsfrom the men's tees (650from the tips!) and requiresan uphill, hazardcrossingfinal swing ofat least 120 yards.Several tee boxeshave been changed includingthe new one atPhoto courtesy of Golfholes.comhole #11, a 172-yardpar-3. The new teebox will be further tothe left and will giveyou a bit of a downhill look at the greencompared to the slightup-hill view from theold tee box.
