How can you tell if you have it?You can pass on gonorrhea to someone without even knowing thatyou have it. You may have gonorrhea and not have any signs orsymptoms, which is more common for females. If you have gonorrheaand you do have symptoms, you might notice:Female• a change or an increase indischarge from your vagina• bleeding between periods• pain or bleeding during orafter vaginal sex• pain in your lower abdomen• burning during urinationMale• burning during urination• discharge coming out ofyour penis• burning or itching aroundthe opening of your penis• pain in your testicles12
How do you get tested?For both males and females, your healthcare provider will commonly askfor a urine sample. She or he may also take samples from the cervix [theopening to the uterus] using a swab if you are female, or the penis if youare male. Taking swab samples helps find out the best treatment for thetype of gonorrhea you have.This is important because certain types ofgonorrhea do not respond to antibiotics. Your healthcare provider mayask you to come back to do another test in a few days or weeks tomake sure the infection is gone. You should ask to be tested for otherinfections such as chlamydia, which can be done using the same urineor swab samples. You should also ask for tests for syphilis, hepatitis B,hepatitis C and HIV, which are done through a blood sample.13
