PAPER CHEMICALSChemical additives can be added to the papermaking process at the wet end, at the size press,or in a coating after the paper has been through the drying stage. Figure 9 highlights therelevant papermaking chemicals that could potentially involve introductions of soy-basedalternatives. The effective use of these chemicals requires knowledge of pH, conductivity anddetails on addition sequence and other components in the furnish. The following section reviews relevant polymers used in paper manufacture. In particular, thespecialty chemical families that could potentially contain soy protein based counterparts arebroken down below. Additives are evaluated on the cost of use but those values for soyproteins have not yet been generated.FIGURE 9SPECIALTY CHEMICALS IN PAPERMAKING2010 U.S. DEMAND WET END AIDS CHEMISTRYSizes - Internal0.8 Million TonsRetention/DrainageAids0.9 Million TonsDry Strength Resins0.6 Million TonsSurface Sizes0.4 million tonsCoatings3.2 million tonsControls penetration of water toimprove coatings and ink deposition.Allow maximum drainage for highspeed processing.
