During the visit to <strong>Scott</strong> <strong>Base</strong> the Australian observer team witnessed the briefing of a staff member wishing tovisit the historic hut. Before being given the hut key the visitor was provided with an appropriate shortinstructional brief.The Australian observer team concluded that activities within the protected area are consistent with the purposesfor which the area was designated <strong>and</strong> that activities there comply with the site’s management plan.7.3 HISTORIC SITES AND MONUMENTSThe Australian observer team inspected the following historic sites <strong>and</strong> monuments listed under Article 8 of theProtocol:HSM 18HSM 19HSM 20Hut at Hut Point erected by R F <strong>Scott</strong> in 1902, adjacent to <strong>McMurdo</strong> <strong>Station</strong>. As noted above, thissite is also designated as <strong>Antarctic</strong> Specially Protected Area 158.Vince’s memorial cross at Hut Point, overlooking Winter Quarters Bay <strong>and</strong> adjacent to <strong>Scott</strong>’s hut.the memorial cross erected in memory of <strong>Scott</strong> overlooks <strong>McMurdo</strong> <strong>Station</strong> from Observation Hill.HSM 54 the monument to Richard Byrd, erected at <strong>McMurdo</strong> <strong>Station</strong> in 1965.HSM 75“Hut A” which was constructed in 1956 for the Trans-<strong>Antarctic</strong> Expedition <strong>and</strong> is located withinthe boundaries of nearby <strong>Scott</strong> <strong>Base</strong>.Each of these historic sites <strong>and</strong> monuments appear to be well maintained <strong>and</strong> respected by visitors to them.
