<strong>Preparation</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Natural</strong> <strong>Ur<strong>an</strong>ium</strong> <strong>Samples</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Shipment</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>an</strong> Excepted Package123PurposeThis Fact Sheet has been prepared by the World NuclearTr<strong>an</strong>sport Institute (WNTI) Industry Members to guideConsignors <strong>in</strong> prepar<strong>in</strong>g the shipment <strong>of</strong> materialsconta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g natural ur<strong>an</strong>ium, chemically separatedur<strong>an</strong>ium concentrate samples (solids <strong>an</strong>d liquids),<strong>an</strong>d ur<strong>an</strong>ium ore samples.The guid<strong>an</strong>ce given here is based upon the requirements<strong>of</strong> the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) <strong>in</strong>their publication (SSR-6, <strong>for</strong>merly called TS-R-1) titled:Regulations <strong>for</strong> the Safe Tr<strong>an</strong>sport <strong>of</strong> RadioactiveMaterial. This publication is the basis <strong>of</strong> m<strong>an</strong>y<strong>in</strong>ternational <strong>an</strong>d national regulations <strong>for</strong> the safetr<strong>an</strong>sport <strong>of</strong> radioactive materials. Compli<strong>an</strong>ce withSSR-6 does not necessarily imply that States’ regulationswill be complied with. It is the Consignor’s duty toensure that the method <strong>of</strong> packag<strong>in</strong>g the radioactivematerial is compli<strong>an</strong>t with the regulations <strong>of</strong> eachcountry that the material is be<strong>in</strong>g tr<strong>an</strong>sported throughor <strong>in</strong>to. (A summary c<strong>an</strong> be found <strong>in</strong> WNTI Fact Sheet:Safety Regulations Govern<strong>in</strong>g the Tr<strong>an</strong>sport <strong>of</strong>Radioactive Material).This Fact Sheet <strong>in</strong>cludes comments that describe the<strong>in</strong>dustry agreed best practices <strong>in</strong> shipp<strong>in</strong>g naturalur<strong>an</strong>ium samples.<strong>Natural</strong> <strong>Ur<strong>an</strong>ium</strong><strong>Natural</strong> ur<strong>an</strong>ium is def<strong>in</strong>ed as ur<strong>an</strong>ium (which may bechemically separated) conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the naturally occurr<strong>in</strong>gdistribution <strong>of</strong> ur<strong>an</strong>ium isotopes (approximately 99.28%ur<strong>an</strong>ium-238 <strong>an</strong>d 0.72% ur<strong>an</strong>ium-235, by mass). A verysmall mass percentage <strong>of</strong> ur<strong>an</strong>ium-234 is present.
