Ph.D. Program10Alumni SpotlightEric PressAfter earningh<strong>is</strong> doctoraldegree fromthe <strong>University</strong><strong>of</strong> Oregon in1988, Ericbegan h<strong>is</strong>career at SUNYat Buffalo.<strong>The</strong> durability<strong>of</strong> westernNew York winters soon exceededh<strong>is</strong> patience (having been ra<strong>is</strong>ed inMiami), so he moved to Philadelphia(where h<strong>is</strong> wife has relatives) tojoin the Fox School <strong>of</strong> <strong>Business</strong> atTemple <strong>University</strong>.Eric has been an active researcher,publ<strong>is</strong>hing in j<strong>our</strong>nals such as J<strong>our</strong>nal<strong>of</strong> Accounting and Economics, J<strong>our</strong>nal<strong>of</strong> Accounting and Public Policy, <strong>The</strong>Accounting Review, ContemporaryAccounting Research, Review <strong>of</strong>Accounting Studies, and the J<strong>our</strong>nal<strong>of</strong> <strong>Business</strong> Finance and Accounting.He has taught a variety <strong>of</strong> accountingc<strong>our</strong>ses at the undergraduate, M.B.A.,and Ph.D. levels.As chair <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong>Accounting at Temple since 2006,Eric has crossed a number <strong>of</strong> items<strong>of</strong>f h<strong>is</strong> to-do l<strong>is</strong>t. He rev<strong>is</strong>ed theundergraduate curriculum to makelearning more effective for students;instituted an annual performancereview <strong>of</strong> undergraduate accountingmajors; recruited several nationallyprominent accounting scholars;signed founding members <strong>of</strong> theTemple Accounting Circle to supportfaculty research, Ph.D. studentscholarships, and pr<strong>of</strong>essionaldevelopment activities; and initiateda master <strong>of</strong> accountancy programthat begins in 2011. <strong>The</strong>seaccompl<strong>is</strong>hments evidence Eric’sdedication to accounting educationand research.As the years tick by, Eric remainsengaged in h<strong>is</strong> work and devoted tohaving fun with h<strong>is</strong> wife and children.He remembers the six years hespent in Eugene fondly.2008–9 Ph.D. students (clockw<strong>is</strong>e from back): Mark Jackson, Isho Tama-Sweet, Joshua Filzen,L<strong>is</strong>a Eiler, Nam Tran, Pei Hui Hsu, Kevin Rich, Jin Wook (Chr<strong>is</strong>) Kim, and Kean (William) WuToday’s students aretomorrow’s scholars<strong>The</strong> accounting department operates an active Ph.D. program designed to trainstudents for a successful career in academia. Th<strong>is</strong> fall we welcomed Jingjing Huangand Jaehyeon Kim to <strong>our</strong> program. Jingjing has a master <strong>of</strong> accountancy degreefrom Iowa State <strong>University</strong>, and Jaehyeon has a master’s degree in economics fromVanderbilt <strong>University</strong>.F<strong>our</strong> students graduated from <strong>our</strong> program in 2009. All started as new ass<strong>is</strong>tantpr<strong>of</strong>essors. L<strong>is</strong>a Eiler and Isho Tama-Sweet went to California State <strong>University</strong>,Fullerton. Kevin Rich moved to Loyola <strong>College</strong> in Maryland, and Mark Jackson willbe starting at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Nevada, Reno. We gratefully acknowledge all <strong>of</strong> theirvaluable contributions to <strong>our</strong> accounting program and w<strong>is</strong>h them success as theystart their exciting new careers.Chr<strong>is</strong> Kim, Pei Hui Hsu, Josh Filzen, William Wu, and Nam Tran are continuing theirstudies in the program. We congratulate Nam, Josh, and William for passing theirqualifying exams and advancing to the d<strong>is</strong>sertation stage <strong>of</strong> the program.<strong>The</strong> doctoral program relies heavily on the financial support provided by theAccounting Circle and <strong>our</strong> doctoral alumni. <strong>The</strong> funding allows us to compete forthe top students and provides additional research opportunities for <strong>our</strong> students.<strong>The</strong> funding allows <strong>our</strong> students to focus on developing their research skills andgenerating a research portfolio that will enhance their placement opportunities.We are always looking for strong candidates to join <strong>our</strong> program. Although doctoralprograms and subsequent academic careers are demanding, they provide rewards(monetary and otherw<strong>is</strong>e) that few careers can match. If you are someone who wouldappreciate the thrill <strong>of</strong> d<strong>is</strong>covery, the feeling <strong>of</strong> accompl<strong>is</strong>hment <strong>of</strong> seeing y<strong>our</strong> workin print, and the sat<strong>is</strong>faction that goes with being a positive influence in the lives <strong>of</strong>y<strong>our</strong> students, we hope that you will consider <strong>our</strong> program.
