INTER-REGIONAL PUBLIC TRANSPORTTHE ROLE OF INTER-REGIONAL PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN REGIONAL NSWRECOMMENDATION 5The Committee recommends that <strong>Transport</strong> for NSW conducts a review ofRegional <strong>Transport</strong> Coordinators to examine their role, including, but notlimited to their role in the following:• assessing public transport needs and service gaps in their target regions• developing appropriate strategies to meet the needs identified and• facilitating liaison and consultation between local governments and<strong>Transport</strong> for NSW in relation to public transport issues.2.91 The Committee also recommends that once the review is completed, <strong>Transport</strong>for NSW actively publicises the role of RTCs to <strong>regional</strong> communities, anddevelops strategies to encourage greater engagement between RTCs and theirlocal stakeholders.RECOMMENDATION 6The Committee recommends that <strong>Transport</strong> for NSW publicises the role ofRegional <strong>Transport</strong> Coordinators to <strong>regional</strong> communities, and developsstrategies to encourage greater engagement between Regional <strong>Transport</strong>Coordinators and their local stakeholders.Committee comment2.92 The Committee considers that there may also be value in <strong>Transport</strong> for NSWdeveloping a mechanism whereby <strong>regional</strong> staff (such as railway station staff) areregularly consulted about issues affecting their local areas, including theirsuggestions for improved services. Such frontline staff are in a unique position tocomment on these issues and their input could prove valuable.2.93 The Committee therefore recommends that <strong>Transport</strong> for NSW, in conjunctionwith NSW TrainLink, develops a systematic mechanism for <strong>regional</strong> transportstaff to have input into suggested improvements to the inter-<strong>regional</strong> transportnetwork.RECOMMENDATION 7The Committee recommends that <strong>Transport</strong> for NSW, in conjunction with NSWTrainLink, develops a systematic mechanism for <strong>regional</strong> transport staff to haveinput into suggested improvements to the inter-<strong>regional</strong> transport network.MARCH 2014 25
