At least one year <strong>of</strong> progressively responsible experience, gained after completion <strong>of</strong> abachelor’s degree, in such fields as probation, pretrial services, parole, corrections, criminalinvestigations, or work in substance/addiction treatment is required. Experience as a police,custodial, or security <strong>of</strong>ficer, other than any criminal investigative experience, is not consideredcreditable experience. Completion <strong>of</strong> a Juris Doctor (JD) degree may qualify incumbent to beplaced at CL-27.In addition, applicants must have solid analytical skills and excellent written and oralcommunication skills. Skill in using automated equipment, including mobile devices, computers<strong>of</strong>tware and database applications, and typing pr<strong>of</strong>iciency is required.Physical Requirements and Maximum Entry Age:The duties <strong>of</strong> probation <strong>of</strong>ficers require the investigation and management <strong>of</strong> alleged criminal<strong>of</strong>fenders or convicted <strong>of</strong>fenders who present physical danger to <strong>of</strong>ficers and to the public. Inthe supervision, treatment, and control <strong>of</strong> these <strong>of</strong>fenders, these duties require moderate toarduous physical exercise, including prolonged periods <strong>of</strong> walking and standing, physicaldexterity and coordination necessary for <strong>of</strong>ficer safety, and use <strong>of</strong> self-defense tactics. On adaily basis, these <strong>of</strong>ficers face unusual mental and physical stress because they are subject todanger and possible harm during frequent, direct contact with individuals who are suspected orconvicted <strong>of</strong> committing federal <strong>of</strong>fenses.Because <strong>of</strong>ficers must effectively deal with physical attacks and are subject to moderate toarduous physical exertion, applicants must be physically capable. <strong>Offic</strong>ers must possess, with orwithout corrective lenses, good distance vision in at least one eye and the ability to read normalsize print. Normal hearing ability, with or without a hearing aid, is also required. Any severehealth problems, such as physical defects, disease, and deformities that constitute employmenthazards to the applicant or others, may be disqualifying.First-time appointees to positions covered under law enforcement <strong>of</strong>ficer retirement provisionsmust not have reached their 37 th birthday at the time <strong>of</strong> appointment. Applicants 37 or over whohave previous law enforcement <strong>of</strong>ficer experience under the Civil Service Retirement System orthe Federal Employees’ Retirement System and who have either a subsequent break in service orintervening service in a non-law enforcement <strong>of</strong>ficer position may have their previous lawenforcement experience subtracted from their age to determine whether they meet the maximumage requirement.Special Requirements for <strong>Probation</strong> <strong>Offic</strong>ers:Prior to appointment, the selectee considered for this position will undergo a medicalexamination and drug screening. Upon successful completion <strong>of</strong> the medical examination anddrug screening, the selectee may then be appointed provisionally, pending a favorable suitabilitydetermination by the court. In addition, as conditions <strong>of</strong> employment, the incumbent will besubject to ongoing random drug screening, updated background investigations every five years,and, as deemed necessary by management for reasonable cause, may be subject to subsequentfitness-for-duty evaluations.
