Applying for thegrants requires students to articulatetheir research needs and thus gain experiencein grant writing. For example, the Edward A. &Anna G. Birge Undergraduate ScholarshipFund, which awards $3,000 forsummer research, requires applicantsto write a research statement, build abudget, and get a letter of support fromtheir adviser.“Essentially, they create a mini grantproposal,” said Department of Zoologysupervisor Peggy Nowicki, who administersthe grants. “The process teaches themhow to write persuasively for funding.”Students often use the money to payfor much-needed lab supplies, but thefunds also mean that they won’t have toscramble for a summer job.
