<strong>hepatitis</strong> B <strong>virus</strong>-DNA assay, Abbott Laboratories), <strong>and</strong> HLA was characterized bymicrocytotoxicity test for groups 1 <strong>and</strong> 3. All <strong>in</strong>fants <strong>in</strong> groups 1 <strong>and</strong> 2 were born to HBeAgcarrier mothers, <strong>and</strong> those <strong>in</strong> group 3 to HBeAg-negative mothers. Hepatitis B <strong>virus</strong>-DNA levels <strong>in</strong>maternal serum <strong>in</strong> group 1 were significantly higher than <strong>in</strong> group 2 (Wilcoxon rank-sum test: p 10 000 000 copies/ml), whereas32.26% exhibited HBV-DNA levels between 1 500 <strong>and</strong> 40 000 copies/ml. The overall prevalence<strong>of</strong> HBsAg is relatively low among women at reproductive age <strong>in</strong> Greece but is higher enoughamong specific populations. The HBeAg(-)/anti-HBe(+) serological status <strong>and</strong> the extremely lowor even undetectable viral replicative status <strong>in</strong> the majority <strong>of</strong> HBsAg(+) women <strong>of</strong> our studypopulation, suggest that only a small proportion <strong>of</strong> HBsAg(+) women <strong>in</strong> Greece exhibit a high riskfor vertical <strong>transmission</strong> <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>fection.14
