Housing DiversityKey to a HealthyCommunityStreamwood HonorsThose Who Gave the Greatest GiftOn a beautiful sunny, Sunday morning, veterans and residents, young and not-so-young, gathered along witharea leaders and service personnel at the Streamwood Memorial to honor those who gave their lives in serviceto their country. The bugler sounded “Assembly” to open the program, which included comments fromVillage President Billie D. Roth, Lt. Aaron Kleinman and retired Sgt. Major Sergio Estrada, Jr., bagpipes, drums, color guards and the Streamwood High School band. As the band played, the flags for each servicebranch rose to the top of their pole. The U. S. Flag was a “weary warrior” flag which had flown over the U. S.Army hospital in Landstuhl, Germany. It was permanently “retired” after this Observance. Those in theaudience paid tribute to their military brothers and sisters who paid the price for our freedom.Over the weekend, many area residents visited the traveling Vietnam Wall and remembered those who gavetheir all to protect and preserve our country’s freedom. The Veterans Commission wishes to thank all who participatedin the Memorial Weekend activities and asks that you continue to support those who serve in thearmed forces. Many thanks to Joe Marino for his service as the Chairman of the Veterans MemorialCommission for the past 14 years.Higher end housing provides key resources andincreases property values throughout a community.Affordable housing ensures that ourworkforce – teachers, police officers, firefightersand maintenance workers – can live and work intown. Communities throughout the region arestruggling to balance housing in order to ensure amixed tax base, while housing workers close toplaces of employment. Streamwood has been ableto maintain a rich supply of housing that meets theneed of any homeseeker.Whether you seek an apartment, a starter home, amaintenance free townhouse or an executivehome, options are open in Streamwood. A lookthrough the local newspaper shows that condominiumsand townhouses are available for justover $100,000. Starter homes, both new and preowned, sit on generous lots and average$225,000. Rental units whether apartments, townhomesor single-family homes, are competitivelypriced. Yet, Streamwood also boasts high qualityexecutive housing. Executive homes nestled inheavily wooded lots, start as low as $350,000, butcan range to over $1 million. The Village does not keep listings of availableunits. But, we do work hard to ensure that a diversityof housing options is offered. The Village isdedicated to ensuring and protecting the rights ofall persons to purchase, lease, rent or occupy housingwithin the Village without discrimination.5

8Go Green …Save Water, Save MoneyThe average household uses 350 gallons of water a day. Cut back on water usagewith common sense conservation. Here are 5 simple things you can do to helpcapture water savings around your home:1. Stop Those LeaksCheck indoor appliances for leaks. Homes can waste more than 10% fromhidden leaks, allowing water and your money to go down the drain. Call theWater Department at 630-736-3800 for help detecting leaks.2. Replace your ToiletToilets are the largest water users in the home. If your home was built before1992, it is very likely that you do not have a water-efficient 1.6 gallon perflush toilet. Check the date stamp inside the toilet by lifting the lid andlooking at the back of the toilet for the manufacturer's imprint of the makeand date.3. Replace your Clothes WasherThe second largest water user in the home is the clothes washer. EnergyStar rated washers use 35-50% less water and 50% less energy per load. This saves you money on both your water and energy bills.4. Plant the Right PlantsProper landscape design and irrigation can save a lot of money and time.Whether you are putting in new landscaping or slowly changing the currentlandscaping, select plants that are appropriate for local climate conditions. For plant suggestions, visit the Morton Arboretum website atwww.mortonarb.org.5. Water WiselyWater is wasted by watering when plants do not need it. Avoid water loss bywatering early in the morning. Set a timer. Don’t water in hot, dry weather;dormant grass will recover in the fall. You might also consider using a rain barrel. The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District has rain barrels for $40. Formore information, visit the District at www.mwrd.org or call (312) 751-6633.For more information on how to reduce water and energy uses, visit the U.S.Department of Energy at www.eere.energy.gov. ✃Be Counted!Census in April 2010In April, 2010, the U.S. Census Bureau will conduct its decennial survey todetermine the total population of the United States. A complete and accuratecensus count is extremely important.Nationally, the census population determines state and federal legislativeboundaries. The results are used to redraw Congressional, State Senate andState House districts. This affects your voice in Washington and in Springfield!Locally, the census is equally important. The Village receives state and federalfunds based on our population. An accurate count ensures we get our fairshare of dollars. The more funding we receive from these sources, the less werely on local taxes. An accurate count can save you money!Researchers also rely on the census. Census results help to direct keyresources and policy efforts. Health care providers use census statistics todecide where hospitals and clinics are located. Housing statistics are used todetermine whether communities comply with affordable housing standards.Income statistics are used to determine whether neighborhoods are eligiblefor certain improvements. An accurate count ensures we get all of the serviceswe deserve! The 2010 Census form will be much shorter and less intrusive. Only 10 questionswill be on the form. Be assured, this information is kept strictlyconfidential. Federal, state and local government officials, as well asresearchers, only receive broad analyses of the data. The Census also offers employment opportunities! For information on employment,as well as information on how the 2010 census data is collected andused, go to www.2010.census.gov.Be counted!Fifth Annual Tri-Village BenefitGarden WalkProceeds provide horticultural scholarshipsthrough College of DuPageEnjoy the blooms of six (6) Tri-Village area gardensSaturday, July 18, 200910:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. “rain or shine”No strollers please.Tickets are $10 in advance/ $12 day of walkAvailable at American Chartered Bank, 338 Main Street, Bartlettand Bartlett Farmers Market, Downtown Bartlett, Fridays 2-6 p.m.For more information please call (630) 830-0118 or 630-289-4253or visit www.trivillagegardenclub.orgStreamwood Oaks Golf ClubBuy one Green Fee, Get One Free!Cart required but not IncludedNot valid with any other offer orpromotion or for league/outing playOffer expires 8/31/09565 Madison DriveStreamwood, Illinois(630) 483-1881Streamwood Chamber of Commerce23rd Annual Golf OutingCommunity InformationJoin the Streamwood Chamber of Commerce for its 23rd Annual Golf Outing at VillaOlivia Country Club on Wednesday, July 8th.
