Pledge numbers are up and we have 4 expansionleads that look very promising. These leads do not includethe reactivation projects taking place at Fordham–Rosehilland Rutgers- Newark currently. So, it seems that if all ofthese leads and reactivations pan out, we can see a niceincrease in the number of chapters. However, on thedown side, there are a few chapters that are flirting withclosing unfortunately due to their dwindling numbers. Iknow the district governors are working with those chaptersto try to increase membership and assess their recruitingprograms. On another note, our new insurance plan is in place asof October 12, 2006, which includes the Membership Accident Protection Program forall of our undergraduates. This is a new benefit to the undergraduates and hopefullynone of them will ever have to call upon it.We are going to try to work more closely with our apparel manufacturer, SpiritRecognition, to create some new items for people to purchase as well as to make surethat they are a continued presence at our events. As we enter the New Year, we are making a concerted effort to make sure there is100% compliance with the new procedures in place. Part of that includes record-keeping.Our record-keeping will be more efficient and easier to comply with thanks to thedatabase and website that will allow for this. As I have said in the past, I want to takesome of the burden off of Central Office for several reasons. The first is that we want tomake this position attractive to people and less time consuming. The second is that wewant to diminish the mistakes that can be made via transcribing illegible handwriting. The third is that I want the district governors to be more hands on with the transfer ofinformation from the chapters to Central Office. With that said, I have to give kudos toour district governors. They have been doing an outstanding job and have taken onmany of these responsibilities already. With all that said, it still takes someone to enterthe data. Based on the compliance rate of our chapters in returning forms, it is patheticallylow. Once the database is in place, the chapter president can log on to any computerand fill out Form C online at the beginning of the school year. No more paperworkto fill out and mail in. Everything we are trying to accomplish is to make it easierfor the members of Alpha Phi Delta to keep their information up to date and for theofficers to do their jobs more easily. The officers of Alpha Phi Delta have been working extremely hard this year with allof the changes and really have acclimated themselves quite well. I want to thank themfor all of their support and initiative in accomplishing a lot of our goals. They reallyhave been an integral part of the process and many of our decisions have been made bycommittee. All in all, we have made some radical changes in the way we operate. These changesshould serve us well now and into the future. Our ability to think outside of the boxand to not be bogged down in the “this is the way we have always done it” mentality hasallowed us to explore new opportunities and streamline our processes, which will allowus to concentrate our resources and money into more membership oriented services.Again, I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank all of our officersthat have done such a great job during this time of transition. Enough can’t be saidabout their desire to make Alpha Phi Delta successful and poised to increase ourmembership.I hope everyone had a great holiday and that we all have a safe and prosperous 2007.2 KLEOS-The Magazine of Alpha Phi Delta www.apd.org Winter 2007
Kleos winter 2007 2/6/07 12:38 PM Page 3FOUNDATION MESSAGEThe Foundation and Its MissionBY PAUL FABRIZIO, PSI 1963, FOUNDATION CHAIRMANHistoryThe Alpha Phi Delta Foundation was founded in 1980. Its creationwas due to the creative and inventive thinking of Bro.Tony Carfang and Bro. Michael Zerega. However, even thoughwe are entering the 27th year of existence, we find that there aremany brothers who have no concept of the Foundation and itsmission. While many know about the Scholarship Divisionbecause it has been awarding scholarships to deserving studentssince 1975, there is still little awareness of the General Division.FunctionThe General Division of the Foundation, which currently consistsof a nine-member board, is charged with assisting in thefunding of educational, cultural and philanthropic efforts ofAlpha Phi Delta Fraternity. This has usuallybeen accomplished through the awardingof grants to the Alpha Phi DeltaFraternity when a request for funding wasmade. These grants have helped in thefunding of various LeadershipConferences where the brothers aretaught about Risk Management, FiscalResponsibility and Leadership Qualities.Funds have also been granted to assist inthe publication and mailing of The Kleos, the fraternity magazine.Kleos FundThe National President, Bro. EvanSottosanti, approached the FoundationBoard, almost two years ago, with arequest that the Foundation take overcomplete funding of the publication andmailing of The Kleos. This was during thetime when the Fraternity was having muchdifficulty in funding their insurance program. The Board voted in favor of therequest and thus The Kleos has become thesole responsibility of the General Divisionof the Foundation. The Kleos editor, Bro.John Russo, is currently completing three(3) issues a year. The printing and mailingof The Kleos costs the Foundation between$21,000–$25,000 a year. In order for theKleos Fund EstablishedThe General Division of the AlphaPhi Delta Foundation has voted toestablish a Kleos Fund similar to theScholarship Fund. There are currentlythree (3) Kleos issues per year and eachconsists of sixteen (16) pages. The costfor printing and mailing one Kleos isabout $8,000. This comes to about$500 per page. The Board has proposedthat a donation of this amountwill get the donor’s name published onone page of one issue of The Kleos. Thedonation will also be able to accumulatewith future donations that eventuallygrow to $10,000. When thisoccurs, a person/organization will beable to have a page in one issue of TheKleos printed in his name in perpetuity.A donation of $10,000 will have a person/organizationname printed on onepage of one issue of The Kleos in perpetuity. Please consider a donation to TheKleos Fund of the General Division sothat we can all continue to enjoy readingThe Kleos for many years to come.Foundation to raise enough funds to do this, we estimate that anendowment of $450,000 will be necessary. The FoundationBoard has voted to establish a Kleos Fund, similar to theScholarship Fund, as a separate entry in its fundraising efforts. The monies raised for this fund will be treated the same as thosefor the Scholarship Fund, where the interest earned will be usedto fund the costs. The current balance in The Kleos Fund is about$20,000. Now, how do we get the rest of the funds necessary topay for The Kleos? You should have recently received the annual request fordonation form from Bro. Tony Carfang within the past month. Please consider making a generous donation to the Kleos Fundby returning the form to Bro. Carfang. A second and very painlessway of supporting The Kleos Fund is through the use of thenew Alpha Phi Delta credit card fromMBNA/Bank of America. Please be awarethat the prior MBNA credit card, that hadbeen in use for a number of years, is nolonger paying a premium to theFoundation. It has been replaced by a newAmerican Express card or VISA card thatcan be secured over the internet by goingto www.apdscholarship.org. Both of thesecards are World Points cards for which youwill receive a point for each dollar spentwhile the Foundation Kleos Fund receives20 basis points for each dollar spent. Thebest part of the deal is that theFoundation will receive $40 for each cardsecured in this method. You only have touse the card within 90 days of receiving itand pay your bill for the Foundation toreceive the $40. It is a win-win situation. You get the points while the FoundationKleos Fund also grows. There are over11,000 brothers receiving The Kleos and Iam sure they enjoy keeping up on thenews of the fraternity and its brothers. Justabout everyone I know has at least onecredit card. Why not get the Alpha PhiDelta Credit Card and help theFoundation meet its goal of totally fundingThe Kleos.
