disastrous legacy especially for Aborig<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>al communities. The moose, fur-bear<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g animals, the fish <strong>and</strong> birds aredecreas<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> populati<strong>on</strong>. The water is c<strong>on</strong>tam<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ated <strong>and</strong> theair is polluted with people becom<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g sick with respiratoryillnesses <strong>and</strong> diseases such as cancer. However, now <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>order to survive <strong>and</strong> earn a liv<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g to raise families someparticipate. There are presently almost no alternatives.I’ve tried to illustrate that Indigenous people <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> NorthAmerica, <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>deed globally, often participate <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> thedepleti<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> polluti<strong>on</strong> of the natural envir<strong>on</strong>ment by be<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gworkers <strong>on</strong> these extracti<strong>on</strong> projects but far too often, weare the <strong>on</strong>es who are left with the c<strong>on</strong>sequences. Otherthan local workers receiv<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g wages, the local communitiesreceive little benefit from the extracti<strong>on</strong> of natural resources<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> their territories with the majority of the revenue flow<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gsouth or <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ternati<strong>on</strong>ally. For example, the Aborig<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>alpeople of the Athabasca Delta suffer the toxic results ofthe tar s<strong>and</strong>s up<strong>on</strong> which their trap-l<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>es are located. Forus <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Bis<strong>on</strong> Lake area, much of the virg<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> forests havebeen clearcut, forc<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g moose <strong>and</strong> their predators to move<strong>on</strong>to neighbour<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g lowl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> w<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dbreaks with<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> theagricultural areas. On top of that, pump jacks (or ‘nodd<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gd<strong>on</strong>keys’) that pump oil <strong>and</strong> gas are pois<strong>on</strong><str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g animals suchas moose, water fowl <strong>and</strong> fish.Hav<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g been raised there, I still f<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>d solace <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the bush<strong>and</strong> often take my youngest s<strong>on</strong>, twelve, hunt<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g moose, rabbits or grouse. It is disturb<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g to f<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>d more <strong>and</strong> moremoose <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> this regi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> poor health bear<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g the brunt of ac<strong>on</strong>tam<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ated habitat. Just last year, I hunted a moose, <strong>on</strong>lyto f<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>d that it was befouled by tumors <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> its carcass. Likewisefisherman <strong>on</strong> the Athabasca River f<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>d deformed fish <strong>and</strong>have to limit their weekly c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> due to mercurylevels. All al<strong>on</strong>g we as Indigenous people here <strong>on</strong> earth have tosome extent participated <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the destructi<strong>on</strong> of home <strong>and</strong>Mother Earth, I th<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>k now is the time to seek envir<strong>on</strong>mentaljustice; <strong>and</strong> help <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> clean<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g up our aquifers, air <strong>and</strong> soil.We need to resort to our stewardship ideologies that werepracticed before immigrants settled here <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> North America.Billy Joe Laboucan isa Cree l<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>guist <strong>and</strong>specializes <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> Creelanguage <strong>and</strong> cultural<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>structi<strong>on</strong>, curriculumdevelopment,Indigenousstorytell<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g, <strong>and</strong>filmmak<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g workshopsto protect, preserve<strong>and</strong> promoteIndigenous languages<strong>and</strong> culture.19
