<strong>OTTER</strong>S IN CAREAs usual, spring is a busy time for us at IOSF – not that there ever is a quiet time! Butthe early part of the year is often greeted with an influx of cubs, and this year proved nodifferent.As you will have read in the last Newsletter, Eliza and Sniffer arrived from Cumbria inJanuary and after initial hesitation they became the closest of pals. Sadly this was notto last for long as at the beginning of March Sniffer died. A post mortem examinationrevealed that somehow he had contracted pneumonia but we have no idea how thathappened.Eliza at the croftEliza was obviously very upset by this loss and she became even more private andwithdrawn, spending most of the time hiding under her blanket. A while later we movedher to one of the croft pens whichhas more privacy and she seemsto have settled there.10Maverick in his box<strong>The</strong> young otter which hadjust arrived as we went to printlast time has now been calledMaverick. He still has his feistynature but sometimes we peekinto his sleeping box and seehis fat tum when he is lyingon his back with what appearsto be an almost smiling face –unfortunately we never have thecamera on these occasions!
Mid March brought Jeannie, a young female from near Peterhead, who is also a “strong”character. Two weeks later Catkin arrived, another female and also from Aberdeenshire,but this time from Dyce. As usual we kept the two otters apart for two weeks but nowthey are together and in the pen with a webcam so you can watch them on www.otterwebcam.34sp.com.Catkin with Jeannie peepingJeannie and CatkinLelly and Tweed, from the Borders, were released at the end of March, and as far as weknow are surviving well.In mid April, we were called to one of our neighbours as an otter had appeared in her porch!11
