I.O.M. TTDunlop’s TT LegendThe legendary Isle of Man TT road race enters its104th year in 2011 with possibly the mostcompetitive and open field of riders gunning forglory on the infamous Mountain. With history made in 2010 when Ian Hutchinsonswept to victory in all five races – the first time sucha feat has ever been achieved and all on Dunloptyres - the 31-year-old is not resting on his laurelsthis season by embarking on the challenge of anew team and manufacturer.Joining forces with crack British SuperbikeChampionship team Shaun Muir Racing – whichraces under the Swan banner - Hutchinson willdefend his titles aboard a Yamaha, themanufacturer celebrating its 50th anniversary at theTT this year.He faces stiff competition from a number of rivalseyeing up his TT crown, not least 15-time winnerJohn McGuinness, who forms part of the Honda TTLegends line-up alongside Keith Amor. McGuinness, who will also race in the World EnduranceChampionship, will take to the course with thecoveted ‘No.1’ plate fixed to the machine, beforejoining Padgetts Honda for the Supersport races.Having escaped serious injury in a fieryhigh-speed smash whilst chasing the lead in 2010,Guy Martin returns in 2011 for possibly his bestshot yet at that elusive victory with Relentless byTAS Suzuki.Elsewhere, former Relentless by TAS Suzukiriders Bruce Anstey and Cameron Donald willcampaign Hondas this year, Anstey on the Padgettsmachine, while Donald will ride for Wilson Craig.Kawasaki will bring its new ZX-10R to the TT forthe first time with a strong line-up comprising RyanFarquhar, Adrian Archibald and Conor Cummins, another man making a spectacular comeback aftersustaining horrific injuries in a crash last year. Alsoracing will be Michael Dunlop, who will ride aKawasaki prepared by World Superbikecompetitors Paul Bird Motorsport.A handful of British Superbike riders will also bepresent, with Michael Rutter bolstering the Ducatiranks on his Rapid Bathams machine, while SimonAndrews will make his TT debut on a BMWS1000RR.Other notable newcomers include JamesStorrar, Dean Hegarty, Daniel Frear and DeanHarrison, while international ranks will be led byAmerican Macau Grand Prix podium winnerJeremy Toye, German Rico Penzkofer andPortuguese Luis Carreira. In all, 80 riders willcompete over theevent, with 51having alreadylapped at anaverage ofmore than120mphover theyears. In 2010 one rider, Ian Hutchinson, recorded wins inall five solo classes of the Isle of Man TT, all usingDunlop tyres. It was the second year in succession that all fivewins were scored with Dunlop rubber, but the firstever time that one rider – Honda-mounted ‘Hutch’– had achieved this feat.Dunlop’s history at the TT goes back to thevery beginning. The first Isle of Man TouristTrophy (TT) race in 1907 was won by CharlieCollier, on a Matchless, at 38.21 mph. He wasusing Dunlop tyres.Dunlop has been integral to all 100-plus years ofTT history. As the bikes developed from thepedal-assisted machines of 1907 to today’smonstrously fast Superbikes, Dunlop played aleading role in developing the tyres that could copewith the extraordinary demands and stresses oflong and ultra-fast public-road tracks withconstantly changing surfaces, where top speedsapproach 200 mph.Quintuple winner Hutchinson used both DunlopNTEC slicks and D211GP tyres for his grand-slamTT week; close relatives of Dunlop’s road-legalSportmax range.Among a cabinet of trophies, Dunlop’s TTlandmarks include many historic firsts:1957: first 100 mph lap – Bob McIntyre (Gilera)1966: first 100 mph lap on production bike: tyresubsequently named TT100 and still inproduction as part of Dunlop’s ‘classic’ range2006: first 130 mph lap – John McGuinness(Honda)2009: five TT wins from five races for Dunlop, and anew lap record of 131.6 mph.2010: another five wins, and more lap records2011: more wins?

ILMC/ALMS review – SebringThe Sebring Twelve Hours doubled as the firstround of the both the American Le Mans Series andthe Intercontinental Le Mans Cup, and it was anevent where there was huge success on track forthe various Dunlop teams.Having been official tyre supplier to BMW sinceits return to the series, Dunlop enjoyed a fine 1-2 inthe competitive GTE class as the Rahal LettermanRacing-run cars locked out the top two places onthe podium. It marked a stunning start to 2011 for thepartnership, which clinched the teams andmanufacturers’ championship last year, with theperformance of the Dunlop tyres on the two M3 GTcars playing a key role in the success.“We could not be happier with the start to ourseason, and Dunlop’s hard work in the offseasonwas a big part of our win,” team boss Bobby Rahalsaid. “The tyre options we had at our disposalallowed us to use different Dunlop compounds asthe track changed throughout the day, allowing usto stay ahead of the competition.”Dunlop also took victory in the GTE Am class in itsfirst race with the Krohn Racing team, which wascontesting the event as part of its assault on theILMC.Dyson Racing led Dunlop’s assault on thePrototype classes as it finished the race in sixthplace overall with its Lola-Mazda. Although notentered into the ILMC, Dyson scored maximumpoints towards its ALMS title challenge with none ofthe cars ahead entered for a full ALMS season.Official LMP1 tyre development partner OAKRacing failed to see the finish with either of its LMP1cars after both entries ran into mechanicalproblems, despite the #15 car running as high asfourth, but the French team took a class podium inLMP2, joining the Dunlop-shod Signatech Nissanentry on the podium in its first race.Dunlop teams lead the ILMC GTEmanufacturers’ standings after Sebring as well asthe teams’ classifications in LMP2, GTE Pro andGTE Am while Dunlop also leads the way in bothLMP1 and GT in the ALMS.

Le Mans24HOURLe Mans and DUNLOPDunlop will be represented in all four classesof the 2011 running of the Le Mans 24 Hoursand has realistic hopes of success in three ofthe four when the race takes place in June.In total, 17 of the 56 cars on the entry list will useDunlop tyres for the round the clock classic, although more Dunlop teams feature on thereserve list and could be given the chance to jointhe grid if others elect to withdraw.Official LMP1 tyre development partner OAKRacing feature in LMP1 with a two-car entry alongwith one car from Quifel-ASM, although the twoteams will acknowledge they face a challenge tofight against the diesel-powered factory cars fromAudi and Peugeot. However, both teams will hope to challenge thepetrol-powered LMP1 cars at La Sarthe and bekeen to take advantage of any issues that may hitthe big-budget factory outfits. The same approachallowed Team ORECA Matmut to finish fourthoverall and top petrol car last year.LMP2 however is a different story, with seven ofthe eleven cars using Dunlop rubber. OAK fieldtwo cars in LMP2, while single car entries fromSignatech Nissan, RML, Race Performance,Greaves Motorsport and Extreme Limites AMParis complete a formidable line-up chasing classhonours and seeking to take the LMP2 crownaway from defending champions Strakka Racing.Only four of the cars in GTE Pro will run onDunlop tyres, but it’s a case of quality overquantity with all four being fancied runners for therace. The factory BMW team has already takenvictory this year at Sebring, while JMWMotorsports took the first win for the new Ferrari458 in the LMS season opener at Paul Ricard.GTE Am Dunlop runners include is KrohnRacing who have already shown race-winningpace this season having clinched class honoursat Sebring in its first race running on Dunlop tyresas well as the Gulf Aston Martin and JMB Ferrari.Dunlop will feature heavily on the JMW Ferrarimeanwhile, as its livery is designed by the 2011Dunlop Livery Competition winner, who will bepresent at the circuit to see their design on track.Le Mans is the oldest and most famousendurance race in the world, and the pinnacleof every endurance racing driver’s ambition isto achieve victory after 24 hours around therevered French circuit.Dunlop has been part of endurance racingsince the 1920s when the Bentley Boysachieved serial Le Mans success, all the way tothe glamour years of the 1950s, when Jaguarwas equally dominant. As an event, Le Mans has stood alone since1923. As a name, a concept, and a spirit ofracing, Le Mans has over the past decadespawned follow-up series, first in the USA andlater in Europe. Run in conjunction with thefoundation event’s organisers, the AutomobileClub de l’Ouest (ACO), these shorter racesfollow the same prototype/GT technical rules. The ACO continued to nurture the concept, towards a major new international series that islaunched in fully fledged form in 2011 with theIntercontinental Le Mans Cup with a fullseven-round calendar, spanning the USA,Europe and the Far East. The jewel in the crown is the inclusion of thecore Le Mans 24-Hour event in the series... thefirst time since 1992 that this historic event hasbeen part of a championship calendar. It willcarry double points. The names of the cars are different today –Audi, Peugeot and BMW; while diesel enginesare now a major factor in the distance events. But Dunlop’s involvement is as intimate andimportant as ever.Endurance racing is a demanding butrewarding discipline for Dunlop’s engineers. The requirement is not only for endurance butalso consistency of performance. The lessonsof the long-distance races are learned to thebenefit of production tyres: a cornerstone ofDunlop’s race-to-road philosophy.

AMA WorldSupercrossCHAMPIONSHIPWhile the 2011 two-wheeled circuit racingseason may have just gotten underwayfor those in Europe, the AMA WorldSupercross Championship has been in full swingsince January and, with just a handful of roundsremaining, at least five Dunlop-shod riders are stillin the hunt for the title. As ever, the racing has been fast and frenetic, while the sell-out stadium experience has furtherenhanced the pulsating atmosphere forspectators. It is no surprise then that Supercrosshas enjoyed a significant rise in popularity in recentyears. As the season enters its latter stages, RyanVillopoto has nosed ahead, despite being the onlyone of the five title protagonists to register a‘non-score’ courtesy of two falls at Jacksonvillethat ruled him out of the main event.Nonetheless, the Rockstar Energy Kawasakirider made up for it with victories at Anaheim, LosAngeles, Atlanta, Daytona Beach and Indianapolis– the most wins of any rider this season.Even so, the missed opportunity means he is inclose company with Chad Reed, Ryan Dungey,Trey Canard and James Stewart, the quartet six, seven, 16 and 21 points adrift respectively.Though he has managed just one win thus far,at San Diego, 2003 and 2008 Reed’s sheerconsistency has established him as Villopoto’sclosest competitor, though an eighth place finishlast time out at Arlington – his lowest finish thisyear – did see the Honda man lose his advantagein the points’ standings.Reigning champion Dungey has alsoconcentrated on keeping the points ticking overwith just the one win in Toronto, though theRockstar Makita Suzuki rider has been on theascendency in recent rounds and has finishedoutside the top five just once in 13 races.Canard, meanwhile, proved he has a brightfuture ahead of him having already taken threewins in his rookie season, the 20-year-old’s mostrecent victory in Arlington putting him on the cuspof what could be a surprise title challenge. Finally, 2007 and 2009 champion JamesStewart is the only other man to have won around, his wins at Phoenix, Oakland and Anaheimmaking up for low-scoring turns in Houston andJacksonville to keep him in the hunt.In the Supercross Lites West series JoshuaHansen leads by three points from Broc Tickle, theformer having won three of six rounds thus far andthe latter managing one. Eli Tomac is also withintouching distance with his one win at San Diego, ahead of Ryan Morais and Cole Seely.Things are proving similarly close in theSupercross Lites East series, with Justin Barciaand Dean Wilson split by just 13 points having wontwo and three rounds apiece. Ryan Sipes andBlake Baggett have also won rounds this season, but have slipped back in the hunt for the title. As ever, Dunlop has played a crucial part in thisyear’s AMA World Supercross series, supplyingrubber to each of the front runners. Indeed, everymain event has been won by a Dunlop-supportedrider, while Dunlop riders have also swept thepodium in each round of Superscross andSupercross Lites West and East Championships.Combining all three Supercross classes, bymid-season Dunlop tyres were fitted to aremarkable 94 percent of the field of riders whoqualified to race the main events.“Week after week, the 2011 Supercross serieshas produced spectacular racing, with battles thatgo right down to the finish line,” said Dunlopoff-road senior manager Broc Glover. “In the firmerconditions at Anaheim One, Phoenix, Houston andAtlanta, Geomax MX71s proved the tyre of choicein the Supercross class with the top three finishersall fitting the same MX71F tyre, while at Daytonathe MX51F was the preferred tyre by the topfinishers.“What is exciting for Dunlop is that after years ofdevelopment and testing by the professionalracers, those same patterns are readily available tothe general public. We have a long history ofsupporting Supercross and are really proud tohave the vast majority of AMA Pro Supercrossteams choosing to ride on Dunlop tyres.”

Advertising featureThe Spanish MotoGP at Jerez marked the firstuse of Dunlop’s promotional Airstream caravanwhich will attend all European Moto2 races.Driven across Europe by Tom Borst of GDEU’span European communication agency, the brandnew Airstream is towed by a Dunlop liveried RenaultTrafic van and once set-up at the track provides awealth of resources to draw people to the Dunlopbrand. In Jerez it was the 2010 FTR Moto2 race replicabike of Carl Abraham which proved to be a realcrowd magnet, especially as it was the only racingbike in the entire merchandising area.Drawing almost as much as attention as theAirstream, race replica bike and promotional girlswas Dunlop’s GP Racer D211 tyre, with riderswanting to buy the product there and then, such isits reputation.Over the course of the weekend, over 1000images were taken by a professional photographerwith fans beside the race replica and the Dunlopgirls, with the images then available for downloadfrom a dedicated website.Dunlop’sAirstreamhits the roadIt wasn’t only having a photo taken, as 750helmet bags, more than 1000 Dunlop key rings andvalve caps were given away, not to mention 2500Sportsmax brochures, and a lasting impression ofthe Dunlop brand was left with all who visited.Manning the Dunlop Airstream across Europe,Tom Borst was proud of Dunlop’s newest arrival inthe MotoGP arena.“The Dunlop Airstream and van met massiveinterest even when out on the road and where wereceived many ‘thumbs ups’ as we travelled to thetrack. Whenever we stopped people wouldspontaneously approach for a better look and toask questions.“In Jerez there were so many people wanting tocome on the stand it was hard to control at times, after the race we gave away 250 helmet bags inunder five minutes!“Traveling in this fashion really does somethingspecial for the Dunlop brand and I can’t wait to getto Estoril.”DecisionPointSome thoughts on maximising riderenjoyment as the track day season nearsThe first track day corner of theyear is always a big moment. Atime for some big questions. Howhard can the brakes be pushed? What’sthe maximum lean angle? When can thethrottle be opened? The answers to these questions won’tjust affect today’s lap time. They’ll set thepotential fun level for the entire season.Tyres are the critical link that will makeor break a track day, so the first decisionriders need to make long before turning theignition key at the start of the first lap, is tochoose the best tyres for the job.Track days present motorcycle tyreswith a very specific and demanding set oftasks. The ideal qualities required are oftenin conflict with one another. For example, fast warm up is essential, but then forextended riding so is temperature stability.Stability under heavy braking is a musttoo, and a rider also needs rich feedbackwhen the braking has been completed andthe bike is pitched hard into the corner. For S-bends, the tyre should deliverstrong tread-edge stability for a feelingof confidence and instant response inlean transitions and fast vector changes.Coming out of the corner, the tyre mustprovide consistent traction. Those are all primary requirements for atrack day tyre. Most serious track day riderswould also have their own secondary listof highly desirable tyre attributes. That listmight include some method of adjustabilityto increase dry grip without compromisingthe all-important stiffness of the tyre.Developed directly from the legendaryD211 race tyre, the GP Racer D211 comesin a range of popular 17-inch sizes and achoice of three compounds – Soft, Mediumor Endurance – it uses Dunlop’s revolutionaryNTEC inflation system to allow precise tyretuning for track days. Gaining that edgeat a track day, is the difference betweenan everyday ride and a truly memorableexperience. Dunlop’s ingenious NTECpressure-adjust system provides that edge. For dry track days, deflating the NTECtyre will deliver predictable and tenacioushandling on the limit.Incorporating a vast accumulation oftrackside knowledge, the GP Racer D211has been designed by Dunlop’s raceengineers to deliver a memorable ridefrom home, to the circuit and back again– and an unforgettable one on the trackin between.10 TopTrack dayTIPS1. Take it easyIf it’s the first track day of the year, the circuitwon’t be properly ‘rubbered in’ and won’toffer as much grip as you think2. Take duck tapeIt has a thousand uses and is the most usefulmaterial you can have at a track day3. Learn the trackStay in one gear (3rd) for the first three laps togive yourself time to find the best lines - buildspeed slowly4. See clearlyNerves at the start are normal, but overbreathingwill fog up your visor; polishing it onthe inside with washing-up liquid will reducemisting5. Be comfortableIf you’ve bought new leathers, boots andgloves for the new season, soften them up bywearing them at home before the track day6. Only brake in straight linesGet your stopping done before the cornerstarts, not when you’re in it: ‘slow in, fast out’is how the experts do it7. The ‘vanishing point’ techniqueLook this up – it will tell you when you canopen the throttle on corner exits8. Counter-steeringPulling on the bar opposite to the corner’sdirection (right bar for left-handers, left barfor rights) will pitch the bike into bends muchmore positively9. Leave your stopwatch at homeThinking about beating your personalbest is wasted thought. Only with 100%concentration on riding will you lower yourtimes10. Check your tyresSharp bits of plastic or metal fasteners canfall off other track day bikes and embedthemselves in hot tyres, so check yours atevery break.RIDE WITH CONFIDENCEwww.dunlopmotorcycle.EU

10 QUESTIONSwith Clinton HoweHow old are you? 42Where do you live? Yardley, Birmingham. What’s your job? Motorcycle Grand Prix Coordinator/Service Engineer, coordinating the Dunlop Grand Prixteam of 12 people, and racing tyre stock of up to 2400tyres per event, providing a technical service at trackside for riders and teams. What key qualities are required for your job?Good organization, management, customer relationskills, as well as a technical awareness of typicalmotorcycle racing tyres.Could you build a tyre yourself if left the keys tothe factory? I would have a good go. I started Dunloplife within the truck tyre department where I was able togain skills such as batch operations, mill operations, calendar operations and extruder operations. By thetime I moved from the extrusion area I was able to mixcompound, extrude it into treads, side walls, liners etcand batch them all accordingly. When I did move, this was into the making sectionwhere I put all those components together to makeand shape a tyre on the old GR machines. I would be alittle less confident in the breaker and bead areas dueto no training given in that department, but if thosecomponents were already available I could probablyput a working tyre together again, after a quick look atthe local work instructions manual.Admittedly I would struggle in the moulding areaalso. My tyre would probably look like a wibberlywobberly thing that went to Wibberly University and gota degree in Wobberling!!! It certainly would not be trackworthy - come on it has been over 20 years!!Favourite tyre? My favourite tyre would be the firstD207. This tyre changed the face of Dunlop Motorcycleso much. Some people liked the pattern so much theyliterally had a tattoo of it put on their arms as Celticbands. What’s the best bit about working for Dunlop? The best part of working for Dunlop is the fact that youare always kept on your toes. The development neverstops in the Motorsport area and we are constantlychallenged to move the product forward as fast as wecan from race to the road. The work is hard but there isalso a lot of fun in doing it. Yes you can get a littlestressed out, but there’s no better feeling than walkingaway from a race event feeling you beat the oppositionand solved any issues that may have happened. Thestress is just washed away! That’s the best bit!!If you weren’t doing this what would you bedoing? If I was not at Dunlop, I would probably berunning my own equestrian business with my daughter. We both love horse riding and it has been a part of myfamily for as long as I can remember. My daughtersoon starts at Warwickshire Equestrian College and bythe time she finishes my aim is to have a businessalready to go. Horses, stables and riding school. Notmany people know that horse riding is fast becomingone of Britain’s fastest growing leisure past time andsport. (From 126 BHP to 1 Horse power!).Favourite circuit to visit and why? Probably Jerez,Spain due to the fact it was my first ever overseasevent and I have good memories that go back 18 yearsto when Wayne Rainey finished 2nd in the 500cc raceon Dunlop tyres. The area has been developedmassively in the 18 years since and this is partly to dowith the success of the circuit. At the MotoGP event, the fans arrive in their droves and the spectatornumbers are over 200,000 for the weekend. It reallydoes give you a good feeling of being a part ofsomething special. I have been there two or three timesa year since the Wayne Rainey days and Dunlop haveprobably found a high percentage of the overall tyreimprovement while at this circuit as it’s such a popularand good test venue. What car do you drive / bike do you ride? At themoment I drive an MGTF, I have only had it sinceJanuary. My last car was an Mazda RX8, (tooexpensive to keep on the road!) I generally change mycar every two years. I am not sure why. I do not ride abike anymore but my last bike was a Honda Hornet600. When the first model came out I had to have one,I sold it after 2 years. Then missed it so much I boughtanother one a year later. That too is gone now and Ifear my biking days are over.
