WHYWhy Vogel Alcove ExistsOur Mission:To provide the youngest children of homeless families with the foundation forsuccess. Our Vision:Every child in our community has a home, a self-sufficient family, and a pathway tosuccess in school. Our History:In 1986 when homelessness began to soar in cities across the United States, Dallaswas no exception. In response to this devastating and dehumanizing social problem, two ladies, Doris Budner and Thelma Vogel, responded. They assembled 21 Jewishorganizations including temples, synagogues and other Jewish civic groups andcreated the Dallas Jewish Coalition for the Homeless to help alleviate the plight ofhomeless families in Dallas. After extensive research, childcare emerged as a majorgap in the service delivery network for homeless families and was chosen as the focus.Vogel Alcove Childcare Center for the Homeless began operations in March 1987serving 11 children from homeless families residing at the Downtown Family Shelter(now Family Gateway). The center was renamed Vogel Alcove after Thelma and PhillipVogel died in a plane crash at DFW Airport in 1988. Doris Budner rose valiantly to theoccasion and, for the next 15 years, used her deep humanity, her love for children, hervision and creativity, and her gentle savvy to engage hundreds of others in the cause. The main facility – renamed after Budner’s death in 2003 as the Doris and LawrenceBudner Childcare Center - has moved twice since its opening: In 1989 and again in1995 to its current location which increased the daily capacity to 115 children.Today, Vogel Alcove is the only free comprehensive early childhood education programin the city of Dallas whose primary focus is to provide free childcare, counseling andcase management for children and their families residing at 18 local emergencyshelters, domestic violence shelters and housing programs.................................................VOGEL ALCOVE • 214.368.8686 • vogelalcove.org
