ECOLOGY. Beaches, inland edge of mangrove swamps, grasslands, (littoral) forest andin secondary vegetation, often near water. Soil: sands or more rarely in clay, often overlimestone, coral, volcanic soils or shale, at 0 – 150 (– 1500) m altitude. In humid areasthe species is usually common at low altitudes, becoming rarer higher up. In dryer areasthe species can also be more common at high evaluation. Often a solitary tree butsometimes occurring in thickets.
